K-drama Star Nam Joo-hyuk On Love And Emotions

Been seeing a lot of South Korean actor Nam Joo-hyuk both on the big and silver screen? Here’s a little more to know about the K-drama star

December 17, 2020

He’s 26, handsome, and has 13.8 million followers on Instagram.

In the last few months, rising K-drama star Nam Joo-hyuk has also consistently stayed on the radar with back-to-back projects: dramas The School Nurse Files and Start-Up are available on Netflix, and his movie Josée is currently showing in cinemas.

AsiaOne recently had an interview with the pensive-looking hunk for the romantic film Josée, and here’s what we gathered about him when it comes to love and emotions.

Joo-hyuk said his love languages are words of affirmation and acts of service.

He added to AsiaOne: “Especially at important moments, giving words of affirmation give strength to people. As for acts of service, it is something I hope to do for others rather than to receive. It is a cool thing to be in love and be able to do something for someone I love.”

During the recent virtual press conference for the film, it was reported that Joo-hyuk and his co-star Han Ji-min both cried while watching the trailer, and the event had to be paused for a minute for them to collect themselves.

In the film, he plays Young-seok, a university student nearing graduation, who comes across a woman (played by Ji-min) who has fallen from her wheelchair and helps send her home.

She ends up feeding him a simple meal and he develops a vague curiosity for this woman who introduces herself as “Josée”.

From this time on, Young-seok occasionally stops by Josée’s house, receiving free meals and getting to know the woman who reads a lot, has a comprehensive knowledge of whiskey, and tells him stories which he’s not sure are true. Gradually, they come to share an unforgettable love.

When asked later in the press conference about his tears, Joo-hyuk explained he was overwhelmed because the trailer brought back all the emotions he felt during filming.

*Spoiler alert

We delved further and asked him on the scene that evoked the strongest feelings in him. He replied it’s the one where Young-seok and Josée broke up near the end of the film.

“I was caught up with the intense emotions even during filming. We filmed according to the sequence of the story so it was the last day of filming. By then, I felt I had already fully immersed (myself) into the role so I could thoroughly feel the emotions that Young-seok was having,” Joo-hyuk explained.

“It was so heart-wrenching to hear Josée saying, ‘I’m fine now’. Just like how the movie compresses the whole process of the break-up with just one scene, it also meant that one particular scene has to adequately convey the pain of break-up and be able to show Young-seok’s dilemma, where he fully understood Josée’s intention of initiating the break-up.”

Most of us enjoy a happy ending, where the male and female leads live blissfully together after overcoming all odds. So Young-seok and Josée’s split was disappointing, to say the least.

Did Joo-hyuk wish the ending was different?

He replied: “Whatever choice that Young-seok makes, he would have regretted it either way. Because he made that decision (to break up with Josée), he became the Young-seok who could come out to society five years later.

“If he had made a different decision, he would have been together with Josée. I see that there is no right answer.”

He added that the break-up, which caused the couple to go through a gamut of indescribable emotions, was also what made Young-seok and Josée grow afterwards.
