Tiffany Young Reflects On Her Career And Her Latest Comeback With SNSD

The Girls’ Generation star has a strong message for everyone and shares why she’ll keep at her famous 18-step skincare routine

November 20, 2022

HerWorld

When we met Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany Young, we were completely in awe of the singer’s flawless complexion. For someone who says that she hasn’t been sleeping much with her extremely busy schedule (the K-pop girl group made a recent comeback to celebrate their 15th anniversary), she looked fresh and radiant.

“I was one of the members who pushed for the comeback, and I was also one of the members who forced the label to give us a full album. And I’m so proud of that. I’m so glad I did that. Initially, they were like, ‘Maybe you guys should do a single.’ And I was like, Girls’ Generation fans want a full album. They deserve music,” says the 33-year-old.

Coincidentally, the tag line for Lancome’s Beauty Tech flagship event in August that Tiffany was in town for is “Strong is the new Young”.

Lancome Advanced Genifique Serum, $135 and Lancome Advanced Genifique Yeux, $110

It’s an apt description of the American-born star, as she spoke about how her beauty ideals have evolved, and how her experiences have made her a stronger person today.

“What would I say to 18-year-old Tiffany about beauty? I would say, ‘You have no idea what’s coming, girl. But changes are on the way, so be prepared for it’. More than that, I would tell her that beauty isn’t just one thing or category. Beauty is for everyone. And I would say this not only to young Tiffany, but to everyone.”

Beyond that, here are five other things the superstar has learned about herself since becoming famous.

“I think, growing up and also starting in the industry at such a young age, I considered beauty to be what society told me I should be wearing, putting on or buying.

But coming into my 30s, and taking a lot of time out from the industry, which included doing a lot of therapy and focusing on my self-worth, I’ve come to realise that beauty is a choice and a mindset. It’s about an awareness and being mindful; to be really fully present, and to appreciate the details and quality. It’s not a product or a certain “thing”. Beauty is something that comes from within.”

She is fully committed to a diligent skin prep

“In K-beauty, the part that I love most is the skin prep, and it takes a long time. I’ll cleanse, put on a toner, emulsion, eye cream, serum, cream, SPF and primer. Sometimes, instead of applying a foundation, I start with a BB cream first. It really depends on the state of my skin that day. After I’ve applied my base, I’ll follow with a concealer.

I’m also strict when it comes to removing my makeup. Starting with the eyes, I’d use the Lancome Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover. I would say it’s the best because it’s sold out everywhere. After that, I’ll cleanse with a cleansing water, followed by a foam. And if I haven’t been able to go to an aesthetician in over a week, I’ll exfoliate my skin. Then, I’d finish my routine with the rest of my skincare.”

She also listens to what her body is telling her

“It’s not about adding something in spontaneously, it’s really about understanding and staying connected to my body – whether I need more water, proteins or vitamins.

For instance, I choose my face mask based on how my skin is. If I’m feeling dry and overheated because I’ve been under the lights and subjected to a lot of stress, then I’ll use a calming gel type with cica repair. If I need something more moisturising, then I’ll pick a mask with hyaluronic acid.

It’s being aware of your intake and what’s happening around you, be it the weather, the food you’re eating or the media you’re consuming, because it does affect everything.”

That's why she still does her famous 18-step skincare routine
custom

“I’m not going to lie, but it goes back and forth. Sometimes, I might even include more products, but I’m not ashamed about my routine. I’m proud of how much I love to find fun and quality products that make me feel better. I got the product (Lancome Genifique) three weeks ago, because when we decided to do this event, I wanted to really share about my experience using it.

They told me that they’ve updated the formula, and I think they’ve perfected it. I love that the brand has honed in and focused on the craftsmanship of this one product, and that they’re bettering it over time. It’s how we should feel about ourselves too.”

Just like the rest of us, she's had her share of beauty mishaps
custom

“I have really full eyebrows, like the Japanese manga character, Crayon Shin-chan. The girls used to tease me, calling me ‘Tiffany and her jungle eyebrows’. But I am proud of them, and I’m so happy that makeup artists have found the ideal shape for my face. Other mishaps include using lash primers that left me with flakes under my eyes. I’ve also got lipstick on my teeth.

I’m not a fan of very matte lipsticks because they change the way your mouth works. They not only dry the lips, but also (affect) how they feel. I’d be laughing, but wondering why my lips seem to be stuck to my teeth.”
