The groom was born Dennis Verbaas on May 1, 1989, in Lisse, a Dutch town south-west of Amsterdam, and is the second of three children.

Verbaas moved to southeast Asia in his early twenties to work as a photo model. He now works for a property development company in Johor.

He was formerly a marketing manager of Singapore’s Tampines Rovers Football Club.

Mr Dennis was also a semi-professional footballer, and served as manager of the JDT Concept Store and Cafe, where they met.

Their nuptials were the culmination of a three-year romance – the couple are said to have shared “instant chemistry” after their initial meeting.

He attended Fioretti College Hillegom in the Netherlands before studying mechanical engineering at ROC Leiden.

He converted to Islam in May 2015, and has said that he became a calmer person since embracing the religion.

While he’s part of the royal family, Dennis is unlikely ever to assume the role of King since the Malaysian rulers choose among themselves who the next monarch will be.
