10 Things Every K-Drama Like Goblin And Descendants Of The Sun Have In Common

Watch enough K-Dramas and you’ll soon start to realise they share a lot in common like plot points, eateries and even evil characters.

May 16, 2017

Love them or hate them Korean drama or K-dramas draw in huge fan bases and tons of revenue. But watch enough of them and you’ll soon start to realise they share a lot more in common than you’d think. Korean dramas nowadays have similarities that some of us might have picked up on. Here are some of them and if you can think of any more let us know in the comments:

10 Things Every K-Drama Like Goblin And Descendants Of The Sun Have In Common
1. Gender Bending Plots
image

How many dramas have we seen where the lead girl cuts her hair short, wears some jeans and *boom* she is instantly a man. K-dramas like Coffee Prince used this plot device as a central theme and so did To The Beautiful You and Nail Shop Paris.

2. A Love For Coffee
image

Seems like the cast of Descendants of the Sun and Goblin share a common love of coffee, especially the hot cuppas at Dal.Komm. This coffee shop became really famous after being featured in both these dramas. Maybe they like to sponsor the screenwriter Kim Eun Sook (as she wrote both of these shows)?

3. Extreme Makeovers

This K-drama plot is tried and true, whether the person in question is Kim Soo Hyun in Dream High, Lee Jong Suk in Pinocchio or Shin Min Ah in Oh My Venus. It generally starts off with a hottie in disguise, before going through a total transformation to win the heart of the other lead.

4. Hopeless Rain Scenes

We know K-dramas are dramatic but they wouldn’t be as dramatic if they did away with their hopeless rain scenes, where a character just stands in the rain after a particularly sad moment with their lover.

5. Evil Mothers
image

This common (and overdone) story generally involves a wicked chaebol mom who plots evil deeds in the name of money. Although Boys Over Flowers shows the stereotypical evil mum character, there are also dramas which branch out into the evil, chaebol families.

6. Dramatic Crying Scenes
image

We know K-drama guys are overly sensitive and cry at the drop of a pin but some take it way, waayyy too far. Let’s face it. Sometimes the crying is just a little too much. Like this guy from My Love From Another Star.

7. Amnesia
image

No Korean drama cliche list would be complete without someone who ends up in the hospital or in an accident of some sort and gets diagnosed with amnesia. Yup, the whole “I don’t remember you even though you’re the love of my life” trope has been done to death but still exists.

8. Second Lead Syndrome
image

One of the most overused plots in K-drama history, the second male lead is always polite, rich, caring, and gorgeous. However, they never get the girl. Why do nice guys always finish last in the Hallyu world?

9. An Obsession With Subway
image

Who knew footlong subs were a thing in Korean popular culture? Goblin eats there, Doctors eat there, even the Prime Minister And I eat there. We’re getting hungry just thinking about it.

10. Yellow Umbrellas

Have you noticed this common trend that some K-dramas are having right now? It seems like whenever someone needs an umbrella during the rainy season, they use a yellow one. See it in Love Rain, Splash Splash Love and Tomorrow With You if you don’t believe us!
