by Atika Lim  /   October 13, 2016

Far away from Singapore’s skyscrapers, there is a thriving agricultural industry on the island.  And you can support them by simply doing what you already love — shopping and eating.

Check out these weekend farmers’ markets for some outdoor fun and learn where your food came from.

5 Farmers' Markets To Check Out This Weekend
1. Kranji Countryside Farmers' Market

Get your supply of local farm produce such as vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs, fish and milk at this quarterly event at Kranji Countryside organised by the Kranji Countryside Association.

Cited as Singapore’s first authentic local farmers’ market, these events also showcase local artisanal food and products, community workshops and fun family activities. Sounds interesting? Don’t miss the second Singapore Farm Festival happening on October 29 and 30.

2. Gillman Barracks Farmers' Market

This lively street market at Red Baron within Gillman Barracks celebrates all things fresh and local where you can meet local farmers and growers for a morning of food, farm and conversations.

Budding growers can also participate in the community gardening while the rest of us without green thumbs can try our hands at other activities such as woodworking and silkscreen printing.

Keep a look out for their next farmers’ market, here.

3. Farmers' Market at Loewen Gardens

This monthly market at The Pantry at Loewen Gardens is not to be missed if you are passionate about produce. Chat with the stallholders as you get some organic vegetables, cheeses, breads, pasta, wine and olive oil.

If you need a break, indulge in delicious coffee and sweet treats on site. Definitely worth getting up early on a Saturday morning for. Visit website for details.

4. OFC Social Market

Hosted by Open Farm Community at Minden Road, you can find a wide range of fresh local produce like sugarcane, common basil, selected meats, seafood and dairy products alongside handmade craft products and artisanal food items at this market. Remember to bring your own bag and cash for your purchases.

Be sure to check out the talks, workshops and activity sessions (covering topics from yoga to beekeeping) for children and adults at the lawn bowl area.

Find out when the next market will be here.

5. Central Singapore's Farmers' Market

Learn more about healthy eating and healthy living at these markets by the Central Singapore Community Development Council. Fill your baskets with a good selection of local produce, organic products (such as locally-grown vegetables, herbs, and organic honey) as well as some artisan food at affordable prices from more than 20 vendors.

The farmers’ markets are also supplemented with fringe events such as a flea markets for preloved finds and an upcycling fair featuring cool repurposed items.

Held on the last Saturday of every month, the market travels to different parts of Singapore. So far, it has made its mark in places such a Buona Vista, Tanjong Pagar, Toa Payoh and Hougang. Will there be one near you soon? Find out here.
