Captain Janeway, the first leading female captain in a Star Trek series, set high standards not only for preceding and subsequent captains, but also for her crew. Making tough decisions, she was fearsome in battles and protected her crew. Despite being lost in space for the entire series, she was steadfast as a leader and formidable against unknown aliens, eventually leading her people home against all odds. Railed against prejudice, Captain Janeway was no doubt strong and inspiring.
A 300 year-old symbiont with the appearance of a 28-year-old woman, Jadzia has the sagacity and strength that makes her an esteemed scientist, best friend-counselor to the commander and respected warrior and diplomat. “I guess seven lifetimes gives me a somewhat broader perspective,” she told Major Kira. When put in command of the Defiant during wartime, Jadzia’s bravery was attested. On top of her courage and virtue, Jadzia is compassionate and easy going, making her a likeable character with the heart of both a lover and a warrior.
Serving on the Enterprise as its resident bartender, Guinan’s role extended beyond her scope. Her wise counsel was sought by many, from the top ranks of the Captain himself to the lonesome Ensign Ro Laren – where her affinity with Ro Laren helped reveal a threatening conspiracy to Captain Picard! Guinan even single-handedly stopped a rebellion in her Ten Forward lounge by firing an energy-beam rifle. Helping Captain Picard see beyond his circumstances with her sage advice, Guinan’s poised composure and boldness made her an irreplaceable personality.
When Deanna was briefly placed in command of the Enterprise, she wasn’t prepared for such a level of authority not because of her gender, but because she was a counsellor and decisions between life and death were not in her range. She did, however, rose to the occasion when her leadership was needed. Deanna taught those around her that expressing and embracing emotions is vital in heated situations, because these are the qualities that made humans humane and should not be viewed as feminine.
