Is Your Child Getting Too Much Screen Time During The Hols? Here Are 10 Tech Timeout Ideas

Every school holiday, parents face a conundrum: How do we keep our kids engaged and entertained without going over-relying on tech tools?

by Natalya Molok  /   March 22, 2019

Every school holiday, parents face a conundrum: How do we keep our kids engaged and entertained without going over-relying on tech tools? While technology can be good, it’s so easy to slip into the habit of just placing your child in front of the TV or with an iPad for a few hours and this is a total no-no.

Not only is it not healthy, the opportunity to create a mindful connection with your children is also lost. This can impact the parent-child bond in more ways than you think. So, we compiled a list of free (or almost free!) and fun things to do with the kids during the holidays that don’t require a screen. Happy holidays:

Take your kids out and about for some fresh air and some exploration time. Plan your day out together by doing some research on kid-friendly neighbourhoods and head there with no expectations except that you’ll have a roaring good time as mother and child.

Bake a yummy treat together

A family take bakes together, stays together. Find a simple recipe that your child can handle, then get all your ingredients together and bake away. The best part? You can eat the end result. Yum!

Have fun in the great outdoors

There’s nothing better than immersing your kids in some nature time so they can develop some love for the planet. Hort Part has a new Nature Playgarden that was recently unveiled by NParks that’s worth checking out!

Volunteer together

Find out what your kids’ passions are, and look for opportunities to volunteer there. If they like interacting with other kids, why not take them to a special needs centre so they can make new friends? If they like book, you can volunteer at the library to help out with re-shelving. If its pets, then head to your nearest animal shelter or get them to walk your neighbour’s dog. The possibilities are endless!

Pick up some photography skills
image

Okay…this one is a little techy but kids see the world differently from adults and teaching them how to hone their photography skills can be super useful. Send your kids outside with an assignment to take 20 creative shots and see what they come up with.

Enlist their help

Involve your children in household chores like sorting out laundry, meal preparation, washing dishes or even sweeping the floors. Kids are never too young to learn to importance of cleanliness and keeping the house tidy. This will be a lesson that will keep on giving back through the years.

Work on a puzzle
image

Have easy puzzles available that children can do alone or in pairs. This will keep them occupied for hours and are great for cognitive development too. Pro tip: Work your puzzle on a piece of fabric like a picnic blanket, so you can contain any messes.

Get crafty

Spend some time together helping your kids practice a new craft and they’ll maybe even find a new screen-free obsession. Start by providing them with some colouring sheets or get them to make greeting cards for upcoming holidays or birthdays. If all else fails, try making slime! It’s fun and it’ll keep you kids engaged.

Read a book
image

It sounds so simple but reading a good ol’ book can often be overlooked. Cultivate a love of reading in your kids by reading storybooks with them that will transport them to another world. Not sure where to start? Epigram books has 15 per cent off for its kids and teens range so check out their selection for some ideas.

Find some colour

Buy colouring books to keep your kids occupied and amp up their sensory quota during the holidays. The cheap and simple variety from bookshops will do for your little ones (or simply give them blank paper and let them go ham!) but for older kids try buying those mindful colouring books made for adults.
