From eBay to Carousell, there are more than enough online platforms around that can help you list, promote and ultimately sell your preloved and/or unwanted goods. The apps themselves make selling them easy enough, but selling them effectively is something else altogether. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your hand-me-downs!
(Please Note: This tips are ideal for items of mid-range price and not luxury products.)
The Universal Product Code, or UPC, of an item is probably the most important string of numbers you have to know about! Every item sold by a registered brand or business would have a unique UPC, kind of like an NRIC, but for commodities. Each UPC is also unique to the specific model and color scheme. For instance, if you have two identical tops but in different colors, chances are, their UPCs would differ as well.
Knowing the UPC of your item can be superbly useful. By inputing UPCs into websites like https://www.upcdatabase.com, you can even confirm the authenticity of your own preloved item.
On fashion items, UPCs usually found on the price tags or boxes or even the sales receipt. Some shoe brands (like Nike) print their UPCs on the underside of the shoe tongues, so be sure to look out for that!
Adding the UPC on your eBay or Carousell listing would almost definitely heighten the air of authenticity and in turn attract the attention of potential buyers – especially for items whose tags had already been removed.

Uploading an image of the proof of purchase could also warrant a higher selling price. As authenticity is key particularly when engaging in e-commerce, receipts are always helpful.
However, be sure not to disclose the receipt reference numbers until you know that buyers are 100% keen on purchasing your item. (There are some shady people out there who would steal your listed photos and pass them off as their own.)

Let’s face it people, better photos get more attention and justify higher prices. Any item shot in good lighting is sure to gain more than a few bids or offers!
Another important note – always be honest about any defects. If possible, snap and upload close up AND wide-angled images of the defects such that buyers would feel less weary and more trusting towards you and your items.

Adding a brief, and accurate, product description is another sure-fire way of getting buyers interested in your item. Don’t be afraid to describe them thoroughly even if their colors, shapes, material, or make can be seen clearly in their images. The act of giving your buyers peace of mind is something that they would definitely pay extra for.
