Here’s How To Organise Your Home In 30 Minutes Or Less

No matter how attentive you are with your household chores, clutter will always build back up. Here’s how to spring into action and stay organised!

by Text by Shannon Lush, Home & Garden (Bauer) / Additional Reporting by Natalya Molok  /   August 3, 2016

Being organised doesn’t mean you have to throw everything out, it simply requires you to create a designated space for what you want to keep. To stay organised, follow our quick and easy guide below that will spruce up your home in a matter of minutes. Now, you don’t have to tackle all these tasks at once. Getting a clean home is a cumulative effort so try to do a little at a time (take 15 to 30 minutes each day to complete a task) and by the end of the week, it will feel like you live in a brand, sparkling new home. Here’s how to get started:

Here's How To Organise Your Home In 30 Minutes Or Less
1. Donate Your Old Clothes

Gather up all the clothes you haven’t worn lately — and won’t wear again — and put them aside in a box that you can donate to charity.

2. Set Up A System

If you find clutter building up in any particular room, set up a system to help control the mess. For instance, if you tend to leave out blankets, put out a large basket to throw them in before heading to bed.

3. Make Your Bed

It takes maybe 2 minutes to do and makes a huge difference in how clean and organized your bedroom feels. Better yet: Make making your bed a habit.

4. Clear Up Your Desk

Put pens back in their holders, toss unneeded paper, and straighten up messy stacks of books or Post-Its.

5. Sort Out Your Containers

Double-check that there’s a lid for every container, get rid of loners, and stack them by size to clear up room in your cabinets.

6. Organise Your Cords

Got an unsightly mess behind your desk? Grab some Velcro, zip-ties, or plain old rubber bands and sort the whole thing out.

7. Rearrange Your Clothes

Put like with like: Dresses next to dresses and shirts with shirts. Getting dressed in the morning will be so much less hassle.

8. Collate Your Collection

Do you have an excess of candles or water bottles or board games just sitting around without a home? Find a place for them to live.

9. Reduce Paper Clutter

Lingering paper can make even the most organized house look messy. Sort or throw away any receipts, old letters, bills, or leftover paper sitting around your home.

10. Throw Out Old Makeup

Did you know beauty products go bad? Sort through your stash and get rid of anything out of date, out of style, or never worn.

11. Add Hooks

Hooks are a huge organizational help. They don’t even have to be permanent – there are stick-on hooks with a strong grip that can be removed easily from walls.

12. Donate Excess Mugs

Unless you’re a true mug aficionado, you probably have more than you need. Separate your favorites and donate the rest.

13. Organise Your Mail

A dedicated space for incoming and outgoing mail and bills means you’ll never forget a to-do again.

14. Organise Your Purse

No more digging for your keys: Dump out the contents of your purse, throw away any trash, put away any stray items, and re-organize.

15. Clear Up Your Side Tables

Tuck away rarely-used remotes in a drawer, bring out your classiest coffee table books and corral the rest of the clutter in a pretty tray.
