The rush of the new year has come and gone, and to many of us (and the little ones), it can feel like the days are passing in a blur. However, we have collated a list of family-friendly activities that will help make the days more fun and memorable.
This week we have a wide range of affordable and free craft workshops to art installations that will wow the kids, keep reading to find out what we’ve found for you and the kids.
The Pongal Festival is a Hindu harvest festival happening from 14 to 17 January 2022, and this trail allows you and the family to learn more about it through live demonstrations and hands-on activities. During the tour, you will be taken to the Pongal market to witness and soak in the vibrant colours, learn an Indian folk dance, receive a DIY Kolam kit so that you can make your own decorative floor art, play games, and more!

With the Lunar New Year coming up, Chinese Zodiacs are what everyone is talking about. This activity has four different dates this week, with three of the days focusing on two animals each and one featuring the elusive cat zodiac. You and the kids will also be able to make the animals’ race cars, a modern take on the Zodiac Race.
The sessions and the animals made in them are as follows:
- 12 January 2022 – Rat and cow
- 13 January 2022 – Tiger and rabbit
- 14 January 2022 – Dragon and snake
- 15 January 2022 – Cat (online session)
For the sessions held from 12 – 14 January 2022, they are physical sessions with materials provided while the Cat Zodiac session only shows how to assemble it.

This programme allows you and the family to relax and play tabletop games that you yourself may not have played in a while. From card games to board games, be introduced to a wide variety of fun ones and enjoy your time in Choa Chu Kang Public Library.
Team up, battle each other, and just enjoy bonding your kids in this two-hour session.

Experience a world where light and sound can be touched and felt in this art installation. You and the children will put on Haptic gloves and Haptic vests and engage in the space around you through touch and awareness of the position of your body. You will be able to experience the space through lights, sounds, and play.
Definitely a must-go for technology lovers out there, this installation is all about re-imagining the world we live in and the way we interact with it.

Chinese New Year is about three weeks away, but it’s never too early to get into the festive mood. Bring your kids along to this flower arrangement workshop and enjoy the process of creating your bouquet of flowers together. Make use of pussy willows, red-themed floral, and other festive decorations to create your very own design to bring home at the end.
Your kids will be able to express their creativity through the guided lesson and let out their stress in a positive and mindful way, making it a great option for kids who are stressed with school.

Want to give your children (above the age of seven) the opportunity to get away from their school books and have fun on a farm? This tour whisks you away from the bustle of the city to experience hands-on activities and mini trails that will help you learn more about the upcoming Pongal festival.
During the activity, you will be able to winnow rice grains, weave thoronam (traditional hanging decorations), learn about the vegetables grown on the farm, enjoy a live cooking demonstration, and more!
There will be many interactive stations for your kids to enjoy, so you don’t have to worry about them getting bored!

Want to try your hand at a traditional Indian art form that uses real gold? The ancient art of Tanjore uses pure gold to enhance an artwork, and now you and the little ones have the chance to create your own masterpieces. All the materials will be provided, so no need to worry about that!
Due to the nature of the process, children must be 12 years old and above to take part.

Want to take part in a craft workshop that is soothing? This Mandala Dot Painting Workshop is all about using uniformed circles and other geometric shapes along with vibrant colours to paint your own one-of-a-kind Pongal pot. You and the kids will learn how to use the contemporary technique of using both Pulli Kolam and Rangoli designs in your artwork.
There will also be a fun competition called “Guess the Number of Dots” where you can win attractive prizes and just have fun making your guesses.

Do you and the kids want to try out some traditional Chinese calligraphy? Go down and visit the “Bold Tiger’s Spring Couplets” exhibition that aims to welcome the Year of the Tiger with a bang. You can also take part in the Huichun, which is the writing of new year messages. For 15 minutes, families are welcome (including grandparents!).
While the calligraphy brush isn’t provided, ink, red square rice paper, and inkstone will be provided for everyone.
At the end of the day, you and the family will be able to bring him your spring couplets and hang them up to welcome the start of the new year.
