Gidania Wong is one busy bee.
On top of running her own public relations firm and editorial and marketing agency Mummyfique, the 37-year-old also helms SG Mummies United, a 11,000-strong community aiding mums in need. And during the Covid-19 Circuit Breaker, she added one more passion project to her juggling act by launching SOVA, a line of sleep products using premium mulberry silk.
“I felt that with so much added stress to our daily lives during those uncertain times, self-care would be the most important key to achieving a happy and fulfilling existence,” says Gidania.

She adds, “With more time spent at home, the focus shifted to products or routines that could be done at home hence I felt pillowcases and eye masks were a good way to start.”
The intrepid boss chose mulberry silk for SOVA because its buttery-smooth texture was friendly to hair and sensitive skin, providing the literal beauty sleep that mums desperately need. Gidania also works with partners who farm ethically and sustainably, and takes active steps to reduce SOVA’s manufacturing waste.
But even with the best sleep products in her bedroom, how does this multi-tasker (and mother of two children, aged four and seven) get her rest? Intrigued, we tapped on Gidania for her best advice for finding self-care in a hectic world.
I start my day at 6.30am, settling my kids for school and dropping them off before heading to the office. Lunch is usually a quick meal if I’m on my own, or if I have any social engagements, I’ll usually fix them during lunch timing so it doesn’t eat into my evenings with family. Sometimes I squeeze in a workout during lunchtime too. I end work by 5pm to take my son to his extracurricular activities. After the kids go to bed at 8.30pm, I’m back to work for another hour or so before going to bed at 11pm. I try to have at least seven hours of sleep every night.
I think we can all use more sleep! Having been an exclusively breastfeeding mum to my children, I understand first-hand the effects of prolonged sleep deprivation. I was grumpy and short-fused during the day and found it hard to focus on work. Doing gentle sleep training with my second-born helped a lot though. Back then I had been using mulberry silk pillowcases for better skin and decided to invest in mulberry silk eye masks, bedding and sleepwear to make the most of my limited sleep hours and achieve deeper sleep quicker.
Get into the mood for sleeping with comfortable sleepwear and bedding, it makes a difference more than you know. Use an eye mask to block out ambient light and relax your eyes. Try to get 30 minutes of exercise daily, even if it’s just walking but don’t do it too close to your bedtime. Journaling is a good way to destress and manage your worries so you can doze off more easily.
Lastly, I can’t do this one personally but if you can, stay away from devices at bedtime. If you have to be on your phone, use a blue light filter.
My personal motto with raising kids is don’t be afraid to ask for help. You don’t have to do everything on your own. I’m lucky that my village is reliable and I can reach out to my husband, mum or mother-in-law to help me out when I really need a breather. It’s times like these that I go for a one-hour massage, a hair colouring session that takes three hours usually, or just a yoga practice to calm my mind.
It’s important to practise self-care because I strongly believe that you need to be in the right frame of mind and be happy to be able to care for your kids well. I am quite the K-drama fan so I unwind by watching the latest Korean television series too.
The plan is to expand into more retail stores so our products are readily available for customers. We are also hoping to introduce more Sleep Wellness workshops to corporates so that more people can gain sleep tips and understand that sleep is crucial and essential for them to function well at work.
Products-wise, our travel pillows are out this month. Now that everyone is travelling again, it’ll be good to have this sleep prop on hand for flights and road trips. We will also be investing in research and development to develop new varieties of mulberry silk infused with ingredients that can benefit the skin.
Yes, “by mothers for mothers” has been the key vision for Mummyfique since we started. We are looking towards holding more community-driven initiatives this year, especially in the areas of mental wellness as well as strengthening our ongoing relationship with NGOs like Beyond Social Services, Daughters of Tomorrow and BABES.
Also, the SG Mummies United group is extremely active and we have tied up with brands to distribute excess products. This platform is a good stopgap to help disadvantaged mums who are awaiting approvals on public sector assistance.
