Many celebrity couples have been making headlines for the wrong reasons this year. From Will Smith and Jada to Barbie Hsu and Wang Xiaofei, the public eye follows them sharply. However, there are others who show us what it means to be in love and that are the ultimate #marriagegoals.
We take a look at some of Hollywood’s and the local scene’s most favourite couples to date. From those who are always sweet to each other to those who roast each other online, these eight celebrity couples make all of us feel single.
When HyunA and Dawn first announced that they were together in 2018, their relationship shook the K-entertainment industry.
With HyunA being a successful solo artist and Dawn having only recently debuted with Pentagon, everybody was shocked by the news – even their company. Only a month later, both of them had their contracts with CUBE Entertainment terminated.
However, that didn’t stop HyunA and Dawn from being together and showing everyone their love. Their socials soon became filled with pictures of each other either posing cooly for the camera or looking at each other with hearts in their eyes. They went on to become successful artists under P NATION, where they released songs together under the group name HyunA&DAWN.
In 2021, they went on Knowingbros and told their love story to the world. On the 204th episode of the show, they revealed that HyunA was the first to fall – and that she waited a year and six months for Dawn. Despite HyunA attempting to drop hints and give him gifts all the time, Dawn – a trainee at the time – simply didn’t believe that HyunA would have any interest in him.
HyunA’s first attempt at confessing failed, but she persevered and tried a second time. According to the subtitles, this was her confession:
It’s been a long time since I’ve had a crush on you. I wished you noticed it because I’m not in the place to express my feelings first. But you’re more slow-witted than I thought. So I’m mustering up my courage to tell you this. I’ll wait for you.
And as if this K-drama-esque romance couldn’t get any better, Dawn simply said, “Why? Can’t we see each other now?”
Now, in 2022, four years later, both of them have announced their engagement to the world. They are still going strong and are the blueprint for other Korean celebrity couples to talk freely about their love for each other.
Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu are no strangers to any of us – in fact, many call them the Singaporean dream couple. Having gotten together in 2013 (and Qi Yuwu proposing the year after), they are known for going strong throughout the years.
In a 2020 interview, they both revealed that they were hesitant to appear on magazine covers together as the main point netizens would focus on would be their relationship status. However, with the passing of time, they slowly came around to it because they figured the questions would centre around both of them instead of superficial ones such as “how big was the ring?” and “how did he propose?”.
That said, Joanne Peh revealed in 2021 how Qi Yuwu popped the question. It was a private affair that happened on Chinese Valentine’s Day. He flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to visit her at work – and outside the hotel room, he took out a large bouquet of roses from his suitcase, knelt on the floor, and proposed.
Despite seeming like the perfect couple outside, they are like any normal couple with their ups and downs. They also do not try to paint a beautiful picture of their marriage for the public. Qi Yuwu puts it plainly:
The truth is marriage takes work, don’t be afraid of admitting this.
While the TV stars have two kids, they still prioritise their relationship over anything else.
Joanne Peh thinks of it this way: at the end of the day, the one that will be holding her hand is Qi Yuwu. She calls him her “beacon of light”, and says that their relationship will always be what they work upon.
Now, they indulge in stolen moments eating ice cream together while their kids are asleep. If that isn’t true love, we don’t know what is.
It’s not always about sweet nothings. A study by Jeffrey Hall from the University of Kansas has shown that couples who troll each other stay happy together. It makes perfect sense – a shared sense of humour signals an understanding of each other, which translates into a stronger relationship. It also shows you know how to have fun.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are living proof of this. They are popular among fans for roasting each other whenever possible – on a talk show, in an interview, or on social media.
However, their relationship definitely comes with its own tenderness; you can’t fake the look Ryan Reynolds gives to Blake Lively. When Blake showed up in a stunning dress for the Met Gala 2022, Ryan couldn’t keep the adoration off his face when her dress transformed on the red carpet.
He calls it “a moment [he’ll] never forget”.
For 2021 Mother’s Day, Ryan penned a sweet note to Blake.
…you’re the heart and soul of every moment this family shares. I’m grateful for the light and for the kindness you smuggle into each and every second of our lives.
However, with the dynamic of their relationship, he also slips this in: Never could I have predicted anonymous airport bathroom sex would lead to this. Or how you’d hire Dog The Bounty Hunter to find me.
Son Ye-jin and Hyun-bin were the stars of Netflix’s Crash Landing on You, and they are not only a dream couple on screen but also in real life.
They worked together in the 2018 film The Negotiation, which sparked dating rumours between them and had fans wishing to see more of them together. This continued into 2019, after which they denied the rumours and said that they were simply friends.
The rumours roared back to life in 2020 when they starred alongside each other in the Netflix series. Behind the scenes footage showed them teasing each other and being in their own little bubble.
Despite once again refuting the dating rumours, they were Dispatch’s New Year couple and were revealed to have been dating for eight months.
Since then, the couple made their relationship public. According to their companies, both had fallen for each other whilst filming Crash Landing on You. Son Ye-Jin even personally posted on Instagram to update her fans.
This year in 2022, the TV-to-real-life couple got married at the Grand Walkerhill Hotel’s Aston House in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul in March. It is said that the wedding cost $190,000.
With both of them looking absolutely radiant in their dreamy wedding pictures, we look forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra may be ten years apart, but when they are with each other, the age difference ceases to matter.
The Jonas Brothers star and the decorated actress first got in touch with each other on Twitter. Or rather, Nick slid into her DMs in 2016. What did Priyanka say? She told him to text her directly.
It wasn’t until mid-2018, however, when a number of situations prompted dating rumours. The pair showed up at the Met Gala together, were pictured snuggling together under a blanket, and Nick brought her along to his cousin’s wedding as a plus one (that’s basically an introduction to the family, right?).
And in July 2018, Nick Jonas proposed to Priyanka the day after her 36th birthday with a Tiffany ring.
The couple got married twice – once to honour the Christian marriage traditions and a second time to honour the Hindu marriage traditions. They would then hold multiple wedding receptions to celebrate their love with all their friends and family. Despite being of different faiths, the both of them honoured each other’s backgrounds and commemorated their love in a way everyone could observe.
Now, the married couple is parents to one and has just celebrated Mother’s Day together. In an Instagram post, Nick says:
Babe, you inspire me … and you are taking to this new role with such ease and steadiness. I am so grateful to be on this journey with you. You are already an incredible mother. Happy Mother’s Day. I love you.
Can it get any sweeter than that?
Both are no strangers to posting about their relationship online. From sweet videos of them celebrating the Hindu festival Holi to celebrating their dog’s birthday together, it is no secret that both make each other happy.
Another local celebrity couple, Fann Wong and Christopher Lee started off on what you can call the ‘wrong foot’.
It was in 1995 when Fann Wong first saw Christopher Lee in Star Search, and her first reaction was that he was an uncle. (Hint: he was only 24 at the time.) Yes, you read that right. Only after she saw him in person did she realise that he was handsome (though not photogenic, in her words).
They started dating in 2000, got married in 2009, and the rest is history.
Speaking about marriage, Christopher shared that his plans to propose to Fann were thwarted not just once, but twice. He had planned to propose to her on a special occasion – he insisted he had to, be it a birthday or a Mid-Autumn festival.
Both plans fell short when Fann went overseas.
He eventually proposed without prior planning during a Chinese New Year gathering at Fann house. They now have one son together named Zed.
However, when one starts a family, some sacrifices have to be made, and it’s no different for this couple. This was made evident in Christopher’s Golden Bell speech in 2021. After being awarded the Best Actor in a Mini-series or Television Film, he said:
I know how much she sacrificed after giving birth – definitely more than me. She loves acting but for the sake of our son, she fully stepped into the role of being a mother and that has allowed me to go out and act with peace of mind.
While some couples place heavy importance on how long they’ve been together, this lovey-dovey couple is different.
In an Instagram post written in half English and Chinese for their 2021 anniversary, Christopher said: Happy anniversary my baby! We have always counted how many years (we have been together), (I think) we don’t have to count anymore, because it’s forever.
Similarly, Fann posted the same picture, with the caption “Happy Anniversary my dear hubby. There’s no need to count anymore, just know that it’s an anniversary”.
If only everyone could be so confident in their relationships!
