Fever, chills, cold sweat, body aches… If it’s not COVID-19, it could just be mastitis. The horrific “M” word that every nursing mother dreads. Usually you might have already noticed a clogged duct and slower milk flow, or a hot painful lump in either or both breasts — what they call “engorgement”, which is basically pain that builds up when the milk becomes trapped and is unable to fully drain. Mastitis is what happens next, when the engorged breast tissue becomes inflamed and infected by bacteria that sometimes enters through broken skin or cracked nipples. No, it’s not pretty.
If you’ve reached the point of fever, chills and full body aches, instant relief might require a course of antibiotics from the GP and/or an SOS home visit by the Jamu massage therapist who’ll come knead and press and quite forcibly squeeze the clogged milk right out of your throbbing chest. Trust me, that kind of “therapy” will trigger a too-soon flashback to recent delivery room trauma.
But for those who (thankfully) haven’t reached that stage yet, these options might work instead, and you can try a combination of two or more of these for better results.
From personal experience, having experienced mastitis twice, I wholeheartedly recommend Health2mama. At a slightly higher price, a pleasant but professional therapist punctually arrived at my home a few hours after I called, armed with these magical little ultrasound devices that miraculously dissolved all my clogs.
It took about an hour (individual treatment time depends on the severity of your clogs and how many actual ducts are clogged), but the entire process was calm, gentle and painless.
Therapeutic ultrasound is a safe and proven technology that, together with gentle lymphatic massage, quickly breaks up milk clogs, resulting in a return to normal milk flow with minimal pain. There are three to choose from in the Lavie lactation massager range. While all three products serve the same function, i.e. to massage and help improve milk flow, relieve engorgement pain and plugged ducts, they vary in capability and cost to suit different budgets.
The popular mid-range Lavie Lactation Massager comes in teal or a hot pink rose. It is made of medical-grade silicone, is waterproof despite being electric, rechargeable and extremely easy to use. Simply charge via USB, turn it on and it will go to work massaging your breasts with some guidance — before, after or while you’re nursing baby, even in the shower. Its scooped edge and narrow tip design make it efficient for targeted massage and lymphatic drainage, and definitely beats having to massage by hand.
The cheapest option of the three, the Lavie Lactation Massage Roller, is also made of medical-grade silicone and highly effective in shape and design. While the obvious downside is needing to manually apply pressure, its roller ball design makes using this much easier than a traditional hand massage. Using this before or during feeding and pumping helps stimulate your letdown and is a great tool especially for exclusively pumping mommies.
Finally, the Lavie Warming Lactation Massage Pads have both the vibration effect of the Lavie Lactation Massager, as well as two heat modes which can immensely help relieve blocked and clogged ducts. Where you’d traditionally use a microwave heat pack or hot shower to help “dissolve” the clogged fatty milk before massaging, these massage pads will do that while massaging at the same time. Its unique shape is also perfectly tailored to comfortably fit inside your nursing bra hands-free, which is a huge bonus for busy pumping mums at work.
Made in the USA, both gluten and sugar-free, this non-GMO Lavie Duct Flow tincture helps invigorate breast lymphatic function while strengthening your natural immune system. Using a blend of organic and wild harvest herbs, this special formulation for breastfeeding mums promises to soothe the discomforts associated with clogged ducts and mastitis.
Simply mix 2-3 full droppers in water or your chosen drink, and consume 3-4 times a day, or every 2 hours as needed. Please note that this product is only intended for short term use, when dealing with a stubborn clogged duct or mastitis, in conjunction with massage and frequent nursing or pumping to ensure proper drainage.
Proudly soy-free, fenugreek-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, non-GMO and made in the USA, Legendairy Milk’s Sunflower Lecithin is a supplement you can take daily to improve milk flow and prevent clogged ducts. Sunflower lecithin is a natural ingredient that helps loosen milk build-up and clogging. Essentially, it helps make your breast milk less thick and sticky, which prevents clogging at the ducts, and in turn, mastitis! Being a common food additive with no known contraindications and side effects, lecithin can be a safe supplement to include in your diet.
The recommended dosage is 1 softgel 3-4 times a day for plugged ducts, or 1 softgel twice daily for maintenance. However, do take note that due to the gelatin capsule, this product is neither halal nor vegan-friendly.
Also known as a milk catcher or milk saver, the Haakaa Gen 2 Silicone Manual Breast Pump is moulded from 100% food grade silicone, BPA-free, light, portable and very effective at collecting milk without any batteries or messy cables. It is soft, comfortable to wear, easy to clean and has strong suction ability to help express milk in a natural and not overly stimulating manner.
Simply position your nipple in the mouth of the pump, squeeze the pump to create a suction, and release. The force of suction will keep the Haakaa secure on your boob while you nurse on the other side, collecting a decent amount of milk over the nursing session. You may also use it as a manual pump by squeezing to apply pressure until your letdown begins, after which the pump will do its work. To remove, gently squeeze to release the suction pressure and it will come right off. The Gen 2 Haakaa comes with a neat suction base so you can stick it to your bedside table safely until you’ve finished nursing.
The Haakaa is also dishwasher safe and can be sterilised in boiling water. The only drawback is that it can’t be popped into the UV steriliser or it may become sticky and unusable over time — but that’s the case with all silicone products.
The Haakaa Gen 2 Silicone Manual Breast Pump also comes in 150ml (w/ Suction Base), retailing at $34.90, from Pupsik, and in 150ml (w/ Suction Base & Lid), retailing at $49.80, from Pupsik.
Commonly used as a foot bath treatment, or for relieving muscle aches and cramps, this classic natural remedy can also work wonders for clogged ducts and mastitis. Food grade and non-GMO, with no additives or herbicides, using a brand like Gabrielle T will set your mind at ease for this purpose.
Warmth can help ease discomfort while loosening a clogged duct, so a 20-minute soak in a warm Epsom salt bath can really offer some relief. It can reduce inflammation and pain, as well as draw out toxins from your affected breast(s). For a more direct application, you may dissolve two tablespoons of the salts in a cup of warm water and apply it over the clogged area with a clean soaked cloth. Rinse off after at least 15 minutes, and dry thoroughly — always being careful to keep your nipples clean and dry to reduce bacteria and prevent infection.
An even more effective way, if you have a Haakaa Breast Pump, is to combine the two items for an Epsom salt breast bath. Dissolve one tablespoon of salt in about three tablespoons of warm water (which will fill the Haakaa about halfway) and attach it to the affected breast for 5-10 minutes, up to four times a day. Be careful that the water is not too warm or you may scald yourself!
Another popular mastitis solution which must be mentioned involves ice and heat breast pads like these ones. Lanisoh’s TheraPearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy gel packs come in a pair to help relieve engorgement when cold, or help relieve plugged ducts and mastitis when hot. You can also use them in hot form to aid let-down and help speed up pumping. BPA and BPS-free, latex and lead free, microwave and freezer-safe, these nifty little gel pads come with two washable covers to help you stay hygienic and comfortable. They can be worn inside your bra, and around a breast pump.
To use hot, simply microwave for up to 15 seconds. To use cold, stash them in a freezer for a few hours prior. Recommended usage is for 20 minutes at a time, and these should be washed with a mild soap, detergent or alcohol after each use.
