We Asked 10 Singaporean Husbands What They Actually Want For Valentine’s Day

Men aren’t that hard to please, really

Ladies, when it comes to hunting for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for hubby, we sometimes end up buying things we wish they would use more of, like face wash (if he’s a 3-in-1 shampoo/face wash/body wash kind of guy) or a new shirt (if all he wears are T-shirts). Otherwise, we veer into practical-and-functional territory like a new electric shaver or pair of shoes — nothing wrong with these of course, but sometimes, you just want to give something a bit more special, something that will really touch his heart.

To inspire you, we went ahead and asked 10 Singaporean husbands their idea of what a perfect Valentine’s Day looks like and what they’d actually like to receive.

Overall, most husbands we surveyed wished for more quality time with their wives instead of actual presents. Whether you’ve been married for a few years or 10, we hope this list helps you generate new ideas to surprise your other half, and it doesn’t have to only happen on V-day!

Breakfast in bed

“I would love to have a sumptuous intercontinental breakfast in bed, not at home, but in a staycation. A day without work so I can laze around with my wife.” – Eugene Yu, 29.

If your husband is into staycations, consider one of these hotel rooms with private pools that you can laze around all day in. Alternatively, if you prefer staying home, you can surprise him with these easy breakfast-in-bed recipes.

Something he can use every day

“I prefer simple acts of love and spending quality time together more than anything, such as a nice dinner accompanied by a walk in the park, holding hands and chatting. But if she was to surprise me with anything, I would appreciate something that can be used on a daily basis like a wallet or watch, or a nice DIY frame that could be displayed in our home.” – Joseph Lee, 32.

Yes, practicality and function is still very much appreciated!

Something on the quirkier side

“I would love socks that suit my personality! Socks are an essential piece in most men’s business wear but the office dress code is typically boring, dreary and rigid. So I’d like to express the lighter side of myself by wearing colourful socks with interesting designs handpicked by my wife. It injects a little life and fun into every outfit!” – Li Wen, 36

“I would love my wife to bake some chocolate chip cookies for Valentine’s Day because they’re so yummy and moreish, and the kids love it too!” – Jeffrey Gan, 40

A simple homemade treat is a brilliant way to keep both the hubby and children satisfied. Check out our yummy cookie recipes here.

Revisit special places or restarting routines together
image

“I’d love to fly to Vancouver, Canada, with my wife. We spent some time there together while we were students so I’d love to revisit the places we’ve been to and remember our time there together. Otherwise, I’d love if she surprised me with a gym membership at a place like Virgin Active! We used to exercise a lot more together before the birth of our first son, so it’ll be great if we could restart the routine.” – Melvin Takahata, 34.

Exercising with your partner is a great way to keep each other motivated, too! Check out these cool boutique gyms in Singapore if you’re planning to kickstart a couple’s fitness routine.

Quality alone time (i.e. without the kids)

“I would like my wife to take me on a private date, without our 10-month-old daughter. We haven’t had alone time since our daughter came along. There’s no particular place I’d prefer, I’ll even take dinner at a kopitiam!” – Ying Chuan, 32.

“We don’t usually celebrate on Valentine’s Day itself, because our wedding anniversary happens just a week before! The best present would be to enjoy some peace and quiet together on the 14th.” Jon Teo, 39.

Ah, it’s the simplest pleasures that bring the most joy sometimes. Ditch the kids for a few hours (okay, leave them with the helper or a trusted relative), and consider one of these fun date ideas for parents to rekindle that spark.

“I would love a homecooked meal and some quality time with my wife. Perhaps, if possible, I’d want to stop time and cast away all responsibilities by going on a short holiday. Or even something random like a dance class might be fun as well.” – Darius Chia, 37

A spa day

“Something that will be pampering for both of us will be nice, like a couple’s massage or spa day without the kids bothering us. It’s been way too long since we’ve had one of those, and who says guys can’t enjoy a good spa-cation too?” – Brian Lee, 38

We concur – and you don’t need to fly to Bali or Bangkok for a relaxing massage for two. Check out these spas in Singapore that offer packages for couples.

Something hobby-related

“One of my hobbies is playing games on Steam, so I’d love to receive anything from my Steam wishlist. It’s something that I actually want, plus digital gifts don’t take up unnecessary space in the house.” – Wong Wai Liong, 37.

Getting clued in to his hobbies and encouraging them is a sure way to his heart, because it shows that you notice and care about things he enjoys (even if you don’t necessarily partake in them).
