12 National Day-Themed Treats That Will Make You Proud To Be Singaporean

The trend of creating National Day-themed dishes has been gaining momentum since 2015, the year of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, or SG50.

For National Day on Aug 9, eateries around the island are promoting the patriotic spirit by rolling out yummy treats to commemorate Singapore’s 54th year of independence and bicentennial. At least 12 places are introducing food – from burgers to bubble tea – that fly the Singapore flag.

The dishes draw inspiration from popular hawker dishes such as chicken rice, ice kacang and chilli crab, and are heavy on favourite local flavours like bandung and gula melaka. Satiate your taste buds as you look through the gallery:

1. Bandung kueh lapis from The Terrace

Here is something that combines many things Singaporeans love to eat: Bandung, bubble tea pearls and kueh lapis. 2. Flavours of Home buns by Breadtalk

Craving hawker food like laksa, satay and nasi lemak? They’re all available at Breadtalk – in the form of buns and pastries from now until Aug 19. Its Chilli Crab Puff, which was well-received last year, makes a comeback. Look out for the all-new Curry Crab Puff too!

3. SG54 Merlion cake & NDP cupcakes from Butter Studio

Popular halal bakery Butter Studio’s patriotic offerings this year will please all palates. The SG54 Merlion Cake ($58) features its signature ondeh ondeh cake covered in red frosting and white chocolate drips, as well as an edible Merlion. If you prefer small bites, the NDP Cupcakes Party Box looks impressive. It costs $45 for a dozen cupcakes in Belgian chocolate, ondeh ondeh and red velvet flavours. 4. National Day Ruby chocolate cake from Awfully Chocolate

How pretty is this National Day edition by Awfully Chocolate? Available only from Aug 1 to 9, this Ruby Chocolate Cake ($58) is made of naturally fruity-tasting ruby chocolate, fresh raspberries coulis, moist dark chocolate cake and light white chocolate fresh cream. It comes with a themed cake topper for an extra festive touch.

5. Chick In Rice burger

Potato Head Singapore and the dog-friendly Three Buns Singapore are bringing back the Chick In Rice burger in honour of National Day ($19).

Selling from Aug 1 till they run out, the burger features sous vide chicken breast smothered in ginger and garlic, and a crisped slow-roasted spiced chicken thigh confit. It is then topped with a ginger mayo, chilli sauce and ginger jam.

6. Singapore Stars pastry from Tiong Bahru Bakery

This star-studded cake ($8.90++) is made of coconut sponge and coconut lime mousse with strawberry and raspberry confit. Available until Aug 12, at all Tiong Bahru Bakery outlets including Funan, Tangs Orchard, and Chip Bee Gardens.

7. Ice kacang cake from The Pine Garden

Home-grown bakery The Pine Garden gives the ice kacang dessert a modern twist as a layered cake (from $38 for 500g) with a centre of attap chee, red beans, sweet corn, peanuts, gula melaka syrup and jelly pearls. Or for a patriotic dessert centrepiece, go for the Our Singapore! cake (from $68.50 for 500g, pick cake flavour from its existing selection) topped with red and white chocolate stars, fireworks cake toppers and the iconic dragon playground.

8. Rendang and laksa burgers from Burger King

The fast food chain launched two new Taste of Singapore burgers  – one rendang, one laksa. What’s even better is they’ve partnered with Deliveroo to offer a limited edition Super Shiok Set featuring both burgers, one-piece fried chicken, two large fries, two Hershey’s Sundae Pies and two cans of Authentic Tea House – Yin Hao drinks ($26). Each order also comes in a collectible box with a SG-themed tea towel. You can order it from tomorrow (Aug 8) and there are only 130 sets up for grabs!

9. Bubble tea cocktails from Bar Canary

Unwind at this relaxing outdoor bar and toast to Singapore’s bicentennial one of their unique bubble tea cocktails made specially for National Day. There’s Paradise Pop, a refreshing house-made tipple featuring Osmanthus sencha tea infused with gin, sugar syrup and topped with lychee pearls. The other concoction, Smooth Criminal, pairs lavender and earl grey tea with sweet caramel jelly on a base of whisky, angostura bitters, caramel syrup, fresh milk and an Italian hazelnut liqueur. Available until Aug 31, both cocktails are priced at $17++, with special discounts for HSBC, UOB and DBS cardholders, as well as Park Rewards Members.

10. Nasi lemak and chendol ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery

Ice cream parlour Cold Stone Creamery’s unique flavours inspired by iconic SG dishes are back by popular demand, with an added twist. Their Nasi Lemak ice cream ($8.50) combines mixed spicy ikan bilis and peanuts with sweet and creamy coconut ice cream, crunchy rice puffs and fresh slices of cucumber. Chilli lovers can kick things up a notch by asking for the double-spicy flavour! And for an extra $1.90, have it in a limited-edition pandan waffle bowl that’s freshly made in-house.

The other option is the Chendolicious ice cream ($8.50), clearly inspired by the shaved ice dessert, that’s made with creamy coconut ice cream and topped green jelly, red beans, atap seeds and gula melaka.

Available until Aug 31 from Cold Stone Creamery‘s outlets at Waterway Point, VivoCity and HillV2, while stocks last.

11. Hibiscus hawthorn lemonade from Teapulse

How pretty is this drink? If you’re into kombucha and probiotic drinks, you’ve probably heard of Teapulse (formerly Teabrick). Touting themselves as the only fermented tea bar in Singapore, they’ve created a new signature drink in national colours. The all-natural Hibiscus Hawthorn Lemonade ($4.80) features homemade chestnut pearls (additional $0.80), thai red rubies and is packed with probiotics, vitamins and antioxidants for a healthy boost.

12. Chendol and kopi cheese bubble teas from Supertea

The local bubble tea joint known for creating bold flavours has come up with two delicious new drinks inspired by local fare. The Chendol Boba Milk ($5.80) is one for the dessert lovers – indulge in one of Singapore’s all-time faves in a cup! Fans of coffeeshop kopi can now get your caffeine fix with their rich and decadent Kopi Cheese Boba ($4.80) which features generous servings of their signature sweet warm brown sugar boba.
