3 Modern Korean Restaurants To Try in Singapore

Korean-Mexican food seems to be all the rage in Singapore’s food scene these days and we decided to check out three restaurants that serve it.

March 17, 2016

First, it was Korean barbecue, then it was Korean fried chicken. Singapore’s love for everything Korean doesn’t seem to end and it’s definitely not showing any signs of stopping either. The latest restaurant trend to hit our food scene is the range of modern Korean restaurants serving up fusion-style food.

Most of them though, seem to be inspired by Los Angeles’ famed Kogi Food Truck and have merged Korean and Mexican food together in beautiful harmony. Read on to find out a little more about these restaurants:

Sync Korean Tapas Bar

Singapore’s first ever Korean tapas bar, Sync is located in the heart of Serangoon Gardens.

While there, be sure to savour creative fusion fare such as topokki (S$7.90) or Korean rice cakes, served with a cheese-based sauce, bibimbap rice burger (S$13.90), a vegetable patty made with mushroom, capsicum, tomato and cucumber sandwiched between two breaded rice “buns”. Interesting, right?

Vatos Urban Tacos

Originally from Korea, Vatos Urban Tacos finally makes its way to Singapore and their food is nothing short of being Instagram-worthy.

Popular food items being shot include the kimchi carnitas fries (S$16), kimchi pork quesadillas (S$18) and Korean pork belly taco (from S$10). The kimchi carniatas fries are essentially golden fries piled on with braised pork carnitas, kimchi, melted cheese and sour cream while the Korean pork belly tacos have pork belly marinated in a delicious mixture of gochujang, doejang and ssamjang aioli.

Vatos is also popular for its makgeolitas (S$25) — a cocktail mixture of tequila and makgeolli (rice wine).

Ssam Korean Mexican Kitchen

Those working in the CBD, rejoice! Ssam is the new Korean-Mexican kitchen serving up takeaways like burritos, rice bowls and salads. Inspired by the food truck scene in New York, ordering is really easy. You can decide to add meat or toppings to either one of the three main options like beef short ribs (S$9) or pork belly and shoulder (S$8). Top it off with either kimchi salsa or salsa verde.
