Natural wine

Natural wine continues to be trending and in-demand here, with more and more wine bars focusing on biodynamic varieties farmed organically.

Back in 2017, the scene was just taking root in Singapore with pioneers such as RVLT, regarded as one of the first few local bars to specialise in minimal-intervention wines. In mid-2018, Le Bon Funk joined the party as another major player. Located at Club Street, the wine bar and kitchen features an extensive list showcasing unique terroirs and smaller producers.

Newer players include Drunken Farmer which started out as a nomadic natural wine consultancy – the brand set up permanent roots this year, as a bar and bistro at both its Stanley Street and Joo Chiat. Meanwhile, e-store That Wine is Mine features themed wine boxes meticulously selected to ensure quality.

Ahead we toast some of the best spots to hunt for natural wines, whether you’re a newbie or experienced drinker.

8 Places To Get Your Natural Wine Fix In Singapore
RVLT
image

The lowdown: RVLT was founded by local sommeliers Alvin Gho and Ian Lim, with the aim of introducing wines that are all about sustainability. The gastrobar also prides itself on being unpretentious, with a casual, bar-like atmosphere where wine lovers can congregate and have a good time.

RVLT’s continually-rotating wine list features around 160 to 170 different labels, sourced from countries such as France, Spain and Germany. In celebration of its fourth anniversary, it also rolled out an eight-plate tasting menu titled ‘Four Ever RVLT’, with mains like lobster tail pasta and wagyu cured in shio koji.

Address: 38 Carpenter St, #01-01

Opening hours: Mondays to Fridays, 4pm-10:30pm and Saturdays, 1pm-10:30pm

Tel: 6909-5709

Le Bon Funk

The lowdown: This wine bar and restaurant’s name is a cheeky jibe at the misconception that all natural wines are funky in taste. Part of the Lo & Behold Group, Le Bon Funk’s wine programme is helmed by head sommelier Jos Kjer.

Kjer has previously developed wine programmes at establishments like Kodbyens Fiskebar in Copenhagen and Le Chateaubriand in Paris. His ever-evolving wine list features over 200 labels from around the world, all imported in small quantities. Heading the kitchen is chef and restaurant owner Keirin Buck, who used to work as sous chef at Burnt Ends.

Address: 29 Club St

Opening hours: Tuesday to Thursday, 5pm-10:30pm, Friday to Saturday, noon-10:30pm, and last Sunday of the month, noon to 5pm

Tel: 6224-1490

Rebel Rebel Wine Bar

The lowdown: If you’re looking for unique natural wines from small-batch producers, Rebel Rebel is the place to be. Its owners have direct relationships with many of the winemakers they source from, enabling them to bring rare and underrated bottles here.

For example, the Fujimaru Table Top Daidai Iro from a small-batch producer in Japan, as well as 2019 Volnay Les Grands Champs from a new winery in Burgundy. Expect variety as well, with over 200 bottles and a focus on the taste of the terroir.

Address: 14 Bukit Pasoh Rd

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm-11pm

Tel: 6224-5466

Drunken Farmer

The lowdown: A travelling wine bar and consultancy in its past life, Drunken Farmer is now a full-fledged, brick-and-mortar bar and bistro. It began as a pop-up in Tiong Bahru Bakery Safari in 2019, and has since made its mark across venues such as The Butcher’s Wife and Le Vin, Levain.

Now, the brand has branches both at Stanley St and Joo Chiat, with an 80-plus bottle collection curated by in-house sommelier Eduardo Bayo. Natural wines here include those of the red, white, rose, orange and sparkling varieties. For the uninitiated, the Farmer’s Selection offers three glasses curated by the bar’s natural wine experts.

Addresses: 11/12 Stanley St a& 185 Joo Chiat Rd

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 6pm-10:30pm (for Stanley Street outlet) & daily, 6pm-10:30pm (for Joo Chiat outlet)

Bar Cicheti

The lowdown: Both pasta and natural wines are the main attraction at Bar Cicheti. Around 70 wine labels are available here, each of them handpicked by sommelier-partner Ronald Kamiyama. Many are from up-and-coming winemaking regions, as well as off-the-beaten-path locales.

As for the pasta, expect fresh, handmade varieties including rigatoni, risone and tagliolini. If you’re in the mood for experimentation, check out Flights of Cicheti from Monday to Thursday evenings. These themed tastings feature three wines at $28, exploring different wine regions and grape varietals.

Address: 10 Jiak Chuan Rd

Opening hours: Daily, noon-2:30pm (for lunch) and 6pm-10:30pm (for dinner)

Tel: 6789-9801

Wine Mouth
image

The lowdown: A physical and online retail store dedicated to natural wine, products at Wine Mouth rely on natural yeasts, the land’s terroir and little to no sulphur in bottling. Expect Tuscan varieties, classic Burgundy style pinots or Californian wines from natural winery Broc Cellars.

Wine Mouth even has its own merch, such as a tote bag, T-shirt and wine keys. The space also welcomes wine lovers who are keen to share their appreciation for all things vino, with themed tastings on Wine Wednesdays.

Address: 432A Joo Chiat Road

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 1pm-9pm and Sunday, noon-6pm

Tel: 6974-7236

The Butcher's Wife
image

The lowdown: This bar and kitchen has been serving the residents of Tiong Bahru across lunch, dinner and weekend brunch for the last three years. Since 2019, they’ve revamped their wine programme to focus solely on wines that are organic, biodynamic, natural, and sustainable.

Wines here are curated by Drunken Farmer’s wine expert Eduardo Bayo, with the premises previously serving as a pop-up for Drunken Farmer as well. We recommend booking the monthly ‘5 Bites, 5 Wines’dinner, a five-course meal paired alongside five under-the-radar natural wines.

Address: 19 Yong Siak St

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11:30am-10:30pm

Tel: 6221-9307

The Butcher's Wife
That Wine Is Mine
image

The lowdown: This e-store is all about making wine-buying fun and accessible for the uninitiated. It was co-founded by partners Raquel Takahashi, Hisamizu Takahashi, Amaris Chen and Yaw Bin Hua, all of whom share a passion for natural wine.

Rather than offering an endless selection of bottles, TWIM only has four curated box sets: Classic, Groovy, Glou Glou and a Festive Classic for the holiday season. Each is designed to fit one’s mood and taste preferences, with every bottle undergoing numerous rounds of tastings to ensure quality.

If you’re new to natural wine, we recommend the Glou Glou set with a light and refreshing line-up.
