The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked a craving for sweets, as home bakers turn their side hustles into full fledged businesses while stressed out individuals turn to desserts as a way to uplift their spirits.
Riding the confectionary wave is the simple and crowd-pleasing chiffon cake – but some of the creations trending on Instagram are anything but basic.
For instance, @susanne.decochiffon by housewife Susanne Ng – known for her whimsical take on chiffon cakes – features an adorable array of bakes in all shapes and sizes, from animals and cartoon characters to gigantic hamburgers and castles.
In 2017, her imaginative bakes went viral after New York-based lifestyle portal Mashable wrote about her unusual chiffon cakes. This subsequently led to coverage by media outlets in other countries like Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, China, The Philippines and South Korea.
On receiving widespread attention on her cakes, the mother of three said in a Straits Times interview: “I have been baking such chiffon cakes over the past three years and never expected that they would go viral one day. I am thankful that more people now appreciate the hard work that I’ve put in.”
