Enjoy Great Food & No GST At These Affordable Gastrobars

Looking for a watering hole that doesn’t break the bank?

March 2, 2023

With price hikes being the new norm in Singapore, having a meal or drink at a restaurant or bar can be tough on the wallet.

Despite the rising costs of living, a survey by DBS Bank in 2022 showed that most Singaporeans are prioritising household necessities, including dining out. It’s a finding that may help reassure F&B businesses that there is still demand amid soaring food prices – but a handful of owners are still choosing to keep their menu affordable for their customers.

Says Gary Giam of 435AtHome, a family-friendly gastrobar along Race Course Road, “I’m not raising the prices of my food and drinks as I don’t think it’s right for us to be passing the cost onto the customer. Also, there is no GST charged to them when they dine here.” Here, house wines go for $16 per glass and $48 per bottle during their wine promotions.

The Sushi Platter is one of the many comfort food options available at 435AtHome

Over at Wiped Out Bar, a no-frills rooftop locale situated on the fourth floor of Beauty World Centre, crowds are drawn to its $8 Heineken beers on tap, and chicken nuggets and curly fries at $4 each. The hawker hangout, which opened in 2020, is even expanding with another branch at the nearby Sime Darby Centre in April.

Adrian Tan, one of the owners of Wiped Out Bar, shares that he plans to offer live music performances, a selection of wines and liquor and a full menu of fusion grub at the new bar. There could even be open-mike nights for budding musicians.

For those working in the Central Business District, Graft & Dagger, as well as Jekyll and Hyde, are a hop and skip away. The two gastrobars, which are situated in a two-storey shophouse along Neil Road, dole out Mod-Sin sharing plates and craft cocktails, and you can always opt for their Happy Hour deals on classic cocktails – margaritas, gin and tonics, and more at $15 – if you’re on a budget.

Owner Chua Ee Chien explains, “A gastrobar really allows people to enjoy quality food with their cocktails. Too often, you might go to a cocktail bar for a drink or too, but the tapas selection is disappointing. As you drink more, you naturally might want more food too.”

He says that “inflation and rising prices have impacted us severely”, adding that “energy costs are up about 50 per cent, with food costs up from 25 to 30 per cent. But we happen to have an extremely talented and versatile chef in Alvin Tan, and we’re elevating the cuisine such that our quality of ingredients and how the dishes are being presented – coupled with great service – make all the difference.”

And the best part about these gastrobars? You can’t really go wrong with their fail-safe spread of comfort food and drinks, and they offer an ambience that’s perfect for casual get-togethers. Even better, there’s always something for everyone.

Affordable beers with a view: Wiped Out Bar

When it comes to cool drinking spots, Beauty World Food Centre in Bukit Timah may not be the first place that comes to mind, but trust us when we say Wiped Out Bar (@wipedout.bar), which operates out of a hawker stall, bucks the trend. After ordering your drink from the stall, you’ll want to snag a seat on the outdoor patio, which appears to be a beer garden of sorts on what is possibly the city’s only rooftop hawker destination.

It offers breezy views of the surrounding neighbourhood, which includes some of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve’s lush greenery, and features upcycled tables fashioned out of huge steel beer kegs.

Happy Hour deals, available from 4 to 7.30pm daily, cover familiar labels like Heineken on tap ($8) and in bottles ($5). If you prefer craft beers, you can choose from options such as Heart of Darkness and Brewlander, though the selection isn’t extensive.

Food-wise, you could order the usual bar bites, like Chicken Karaage (from $4.50) and Mala Fries ($3.50), but you also have the choice of ordering from the surrounding hawker stalls. Dumplings from You Peng La Mian Zi Guan (#04-23) or Korean-style fried chicken from Pink Candy (#04-60) are great choices, and this freedom to mix and match your food is exactly what gives this place extra points (in our books, at least).

There’s something about dining in a cosy establishment that makes you feel like you’re in a far-flung destination, and 435AtHome does exactly that with its comforting ambience. This gastrobar along Race Course Road has a Balinese inspired cottage core vibe, with red brick walls and wood furnishings dimly lit by warm lighting.

Wine bottles on racks and shelves line part of the space, and other elements like a large flat-screen TV behind the bar and framed paintings make this place feel much more like a home than a bar – which is why it’s one of the best places for catching up with friends.

The menu highlights an extensive mix of Western and Asian plates, and we recommend ordering a variety of items to share as they come in hearty portions. Our top picks? The popular Prawn and Bacon Aglio Olio ($18), cooked al dente with heaps of bacon bits, beer battered barramundi Fish and Chips ($18), and the tender Grilled Beef Tenderloin ($28), served with a side of potatoes and greens. Lighter options are available too, and the Sushi Platter ($22) – salmon maki with a side of octopus sashimi – is a crowd-pleaser.

Finally, wash down all that goodness with a bottle of vino. Here, house wines go for $16 per glass and $48 per bottle during the wine promotions. Or you can ask the staff for liquor pairing suggestions from familiar names like Glenfiddich and Monkey 47, starting from $10 for a glass of Absolut Vodka Blue.

Hidden cocktail bar Operation Dagger may have closed its doors in 2020, but to the delight of its regulars, it reopened in 2022 as dual concept bar Graft & Dagger by restaurant group Whimsical Inc. Dagger is currently going through a revamp and will reopen in the near future, while Graft serves as the concept’s mainstay, offering tipples on tap and a smashing selection of food. Graft is bright and its airy interior is full of natural elements and neutral colours, with an edible garden on the premises, and recycled glassware made from used bottles.

Cocktails are kept fresh and light here, with options like elderflower-infused Aperol and Prosecco ($19), and Sparkling Sake ($15) available on tap. There’s also a rotating selection of craft beers available, for a total of 12 taps with different libations. And if you’re looking for a wider selection of handcrafted cocktails ($24 for signatures and classics), all you have to do is to pop next door to the connecting cocktail bar Jekyll & Hyde. Smoke ‘N’ Spice, a whisky sour topped with mulled wine foam, and Mr Bean, a heady twist on the popular Lao Ban soya bean curd dessert, come  highly recommended.
