If that isn’t evidenced by the number of people willing to queue for hours or wait online for a taste of their favourite or trendiest offerings, then look at the number of home-based business selling food that sprouted during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. While we are way past Circuit Breaker, many of these HBBs have since tapped on their popularity to expanded into a physical shop or retail space to continue selling their creations. Jae’s Kitchen was born during the pandemic by Jae Teo and her family. Their aim? To create fresh, handmade foods that reconnect us with the taste like how our parents and grandparents made. The brand started with items such as ngoh hiang and curry buns before opening a stall in Grantral Mall near Tai Seng MRT. Now, they offer additional traditional favourites such as yam cakes as well as lunch and other food options that change daily or seasonally.

Mum Daughter Kitchen is a Muslim-owned nasi padang stall in Chinatown started by couple Mrs Jahan and her husband Clarence. The former had the idea to sell nasi padang through Instagram from her mother during the pandemic before moving into a physical space in July 2022. The couple continues to make every dish from scratch by hand, including various types of rempah for curries, black ink squid, bergedil and more.

Puffs And Peaks is the brainchild of mother and daughter duo Linda and Jing Ting. The online bakery gained fame for its signature brioche doughnuts made in a plethora of flavours before starting a physical location in Tampines. Puffs And Peaks is now able to offer a greater selection of natural, handmade baked goods such as cookies, tarts, pies, bread and more.

The husband and wife team, Mr Hafid and Dr Nadia, started Dr. Kitchen in July 2020 selling cream puffs, durian puffs, brownies and tiramisu. Due to overwhelming demand, the couple expanded to two locations in Siglap and along North Bridge Road. Once you’re at the Muslim-owned bakery, make a beeline for the bestselling So Black Brownie which is made with 70 percent dark chocolate.

Kueh Ho Jiak is another product of a mother-daughter duo Sandy and Elizabeth, which started out as a home-based business way back in 2011. The self-taught bakers broke into the scene with colourful iterations of traditional kuehs that span from ang ku kueh to png kueh made without artificial colouring and preservatives. Now, the halal-certified brand has two locations – in Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown – where you can pick up a taste.

For those who fancy a hearty, juicy burger, head to NBCB with its playful name that means Nothing But Cheese Burger. Owner Tommy Wong started experimenting with burgers during his free time during lockdown to satisfy the cravings of his hungry, pregnant wife. The rest, as they say, is history. With two outlets now, NBCB has various protein options and combinations for its burgers as well as milkshakes and beers.

Sourbombe Bakery is another brand that has received much love on social media for its sourdough bomboloni, or Italian doughnuts, since its inception in August 2020. The bakery was co-founded by Genevieve Lee, runner-up of MasterChef Singapore 2018, and now offers croissant rolls (or Crolls), cookies, cakes and other bakes at its two outlets.

All Things Hainanese was founded by Jocelyn and Josephine Loi and Charmaine Goh in order to commemorate their late grandmother’s lifelong work with the Hainanese kueh yi bua. Their grandmother founded the hawker stall Hainan Cuisine & Snacks in Toa Payoh in the 1970s. Jocelyn and Charmaine lead the business and make the kueh by hand themselves, the same way their grandmother did so, and sell them online. In December 2022, they opened a retail space in Bras Basah Complex selling Yi Bua, Tar Kat Lau, Ang Ku Kueh and more.

Khung Wai Yeen and Calvin Lau started their home-based Sixth Floor Oyster Cake focusing on the namesake Foochow fritters stuffed with minced pork, chives and oysters. Their success has since allowed them to expand to two outlets — one in Punggol and another in Yishun — where they continue to sell these moreish delights in different flavour iterations alongside other snacks and fried beehoon.

Fans of Jeanette Aw would instantly recognise Once Upon A Time as the cafe founded by the local star. But ICYDK, the celebrity home baker had almost a thousand people on the waitlist for her WTF (What The Fudge) Brownies during Circuit Breaker. It then wasn’t a surprise when the Le Cordon Bleu Dusit-trained baker decided to start Once Upon A Time where she peddles various cakes and bakes that she concocts.
