Always on the hunt for new dining spots? We bring you to sound bites on where to eat, including new restaurant and eatery openings, the best places for your after-work tipple, and what’s new in the food scene.
This week: The famous Cafe Kitsune has opened its first Singapore outpost, Eggslut is now at Suntec City, Australian chocolate brand Koko Black has a pop-up at Jewel Changi Airport and more.
For quality Japanese fare that doesn’t bear a hefty price tag, Issho Izakaya at One Fullerton is one to check out. With an extensive menu of over 100 items, there’s something for every palate, be it fresh sashimi, kushiyaki and makimono.
If sashimi’s your thing, you’ll be pleased with the Sashimi Moriawase ($26 for nine pieces or $44++ for 15 pieces). Presented theatrically with dry ice, we sank our teeth into the likes of fresh salmon, scallops, tuna, tai slices, and kanpachi. The Hotate Carpaccio ($22.90++), in a truffle and shoyu sauce, and sprinkled with slightly briny kombu bits is worth ordering, too.
There’s no leaving the izakaya without trying its kushiyaki (grilled and skewered items). The Kyushu A5 wagyu ($15++) is buttery and fatty, with peppery notes to cut through the richness, and the Ebi Mentai ($5.80++) serves up a smokey succulent prawn. The Salmon Belly Cheese ($5.50++) with a lovely crisp skin is equally moreish too.
Other dishes to try are the fluffy Kaki Okonomiyaki ($15.80++) and the Hotate Cheese Yaki ($15.80), with plump scallops in a pool of melty cheese. Don’t skip on the desserts, like the delightfully airy and mousse-like Hokkaido Cheesecakes ($10.80++ each), the refreshing Warabi Mochi ($7.80++), and the Macha Lava Cake ($13.50++) with an earthy gooey interior.
Sake pairing is available too.
Issho Izakaya is at 1 Fullerton Rd, #01-05, Singapore 049213. Visit its website for reservations or more information.
Paris-meets-Tokyo specialty coffee retailer Cafe Kitsune, the F&B arm of French fashion label Maison Kitsune, has landed in Singapore. Taking up residence in the Capitol Building, Cafe Kitsune Singapore recently opened its doors on Dec 1, 2022.
The space is a marriage of French, Japanese and Singapore-inspired elements. Think minimalist light wood furnishings paired with bistro-style rattan-backed chairs, with Peranakan-inspired orange marble and herringbone flooring.
Made from two types of specialty coffee beans from Brazil and Guatemala, the Café Kitsuné coffee is distinguished by a delicate balance: both savoury and full-bodied, with hints of chocolate and honey, a dash of peach, and a special long finish, thanks to a texture that is both soft and syrupy.
On the menu are other specialty drinks. To fill your belly, there are savoury snacks such as sandos (from $13) and quiches (from $16) as well as pastries like the cafe’s iconic Fox-shaped shortbread. Exclusive to Singapore are the Chilli Chocolate Tart ($12) and Yuzu Pistachio Strawberry Entremet ($13).
The brand will be also offering Cafe Kitsune Objets, its collection of tableware, ready-to-wear, and accessories, together with freshly roasted Cafe Kitsune coffee beans.
Cafe Kitsune Singapore is at Capitol Singapore 13 Stamford Road #01-11 Singapore 178905. Opens daily from 10am to 10pm.
