Always on the hunt for new dining spots? We bring you to sound bites on where to eat, including new restaurant and eatery openings, the best places for your after-work tipple, and what’s new in the food scene.
What to nosh on this week: Anti:dote has a vegan afternoon tea, Equate Coffee has opened in Orchard Central with a new experiential concept, Hokkaido’s Kurohanabi restaurant is here, and more.
Veganuary is here, and for the occasion, Anti:dote at Fairmont Singapore has introduced a plant-based afternoon tea spread, a tie-up with ingredient supplier Classic Fine Foods, and artisanal bean-to-bar chocolatier Weiss.
It has also roped in renowned pastry chef Richard Hawke, whose specialty lies in vegan, gluten- and lactose-free pastries. He oversees the elegantly crafted sweets on the menu, like a delightful Sesame Sponge with a sesame and yuzu fragrance, a decadent Hazelnut Dark Chocolate Brownie, and a macaron cleverly made with potato protein and dark chocolate ganache. His signature chocolate sponge topped with a brilliant passion fruit cream, however, leaned just a little too doughy.
The savoury line-up by chef Jose Luis Del Amo runs from a juicy Impossible Beef Meatball tart to a Homemade Sausage Roll stuffed with Impossible Pork. Also enjoyable is the Tindle Coronation Chicken tart flavoured with a light curry plant-based mayonnaise, and apricot chutney.
There are two amuse-bouches on the menu, a panko-crusted Tindle meatball that sits on a bed of sauteed mushrooms with velvety potato and truffle foam as well as pan-seared gyozas made with Karana jackfuit protein boasting a meaty texture.
You can order two vegan cocktails – the Colada Milk Punch ($22++) with spiced rum, pineapple, ginger, citrus, and coconut milk or the non-Colada Fizz ($17++), which substitutes rum with Seedlip Spice, a warm aromatic blend with citrus notes.
Available from now til Feb 11, 2023. Anti:dote is at Level 1, Fairmont Singapore, 80 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189560. Click here for reservations.
Popular cafe Equate, which first opened in Tanjong Pagar, has unveiled a new concept space at Orchard Central. The experiential space has an industrial, slightly dystopian feel to it — think uprooted trees, raw bricks, cement floor and stone furnishings.
Espresso-based drinks, made using Equate’s house blend of Brazilian Cerrado and Caldas espresso beans with notes of green apple, grapefruit and nuts, are on the menu. But if you’re after filter coffee, you’ll find it here too. It changes seasonally, but for now, you can sip on Panama Geisha coffee with flavours of fruit cake and fruit, Ethiopia Gujiof the Kurume/Wolisho varietal that boasts tasting notes of berries, oolong, and strawberry, as well as Kenya Embuof the SL28/Ruiru varietal that affords notes of black currant, black tea and florals.
Just for the launch, it has crafted an exclusive 50s Brew, concocted with cold brew Earl Grey tea and cold brew coffee then topped with luscious Earl Grey cream.
On the food menu, there is a clutch of flaky housemade croissants, with options like Almond, Praline Hazelnut, Ondeh, and Bacon & Cheese. Or sink your teeth into one of its thick-cut sandos with housemade shokupan and sourdough sandwiching fillings like chicken with kimchi and spam with truffle egg. An all-day menu offering the likes of pasta and shakshuka is on hand if you’re up for something more substantial.
Equate is at #01-17A Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Road, Singapore 238896. Opens daily from 9.30am to 8.30pm (last order at 8pm).
Perched on the rooftop of the newly reopened Outpost Hotel is Sol & Ora. The all-day restaurant, with a breezy casual setting that looks out to the rooftop pool and cabanas, serves up dishes from the Latin-Mediterranean region for lunch and dinner, as well as a semi-buffet breakfast. And in between, it doles out an indulgent afternoon tea, too.
Start with savoury morsels of an earthy mushroom croquette with a dab of aioli, and parma ham wrapped around sweet cantaloupe. There’s also a mini croissant stuffed with egg mayo and smoked salmon, and a mini quiche topped with truffle caviar.
Then move on to sweet treats, encompassing an indulgent chocolate and hazelnut tartlet, moist red velvet cake and a delicate almond financier brightened with apricot bits. The lychee rose macaron’s good too, with a distinct floral fragrance.
$35++ per person (minimum two persons), inclusive of tea and coffee (one refill). Available Thursday to Sunday, 3pm to 4.30pm. Sol & Ora is at #07-01, The Outpost Hotel, 10 Artillery Ave, Singapore 099951.
Hokkaido-born motsu nabe specialty restaurant Kurohanabi has landed in Singapore. It’s located at Suntec City‘s Eat at Seven, which houses several Japanese dining concepts.
The restaurant specialises in motsu nabe, which refers to wagyu innard hot pot. Enjoy it the classic way with the Hokkaido Motsu Nabe ($32++) that has beef intestines, tofu, chives, cabbage, and enoki mushrooms bubbling in the restaurant’s signature sesame miso soup base.
You can also opt for the Natto Motsu Nabe ($42++) laced with the earthy flavours of natto (fermented soybeans). Other ways you can enjoy its offal offerings: the Motsu Okonomiyaki ($19.80++) which has innards added to the popular street food, and the Wagyu Motsu Yakisoba ($21.80++), which sees the rich savoury noodle dish amped up with beef chunks and innards.
For those who aren’t fans of offal, there are classic Japanese dishes too, like the Okonomiyaki (from $13.80++) with options of pork kimchi, seafood, beef, or pork, the Yakisoba (from $13.80++) and Lamb Tsukune ($15.80++).
Eat at Seven is at #03-316, Suntec City Tower 1, Temasek Boulevard Singapore 038983. Opens daily, from 11.30am to 3pm, and from 5.30pm to 10pm.
