Rainbow Foods In Singapore That Will Make Your Jaw Drop

Seasonal multi-coloured mooncakes aside, here are everyday food items that have been jazzed up to brighten our days with rainbow shades.

October 9, 2017

Our daily life is generally splashed with a riot of colours – if you stop to notice. Look up from your mobile once in a while and you’ll stumble upon stunning food displays that remind us of an Easter Parade or Disney technicolours.

Food producers have grabbed our attention (and Instagram accounts) with brilliantly hued creations, from the tastefully done to the downright gimmicky. After all, they need our dough. Seasonal multi-coloured mooncakes aside, here are everyday food items that have been jazzed up to brighten our days.

Blue Nasi Lemak
image

Feeling blue? Lost your appetite? This blue nasi lemak will not let you down, say foodies. Coloured with the natural dye of butterfly pea petals, the rice that’s been cooked in coconut milk is delicious with their homemade chilli sambal.

Get it at: Jia Xiang Nasi Lemak, 114 Lavender Street (CT Hub 2)

Rainbow Prata
image

This is historic. Since when do you see a prata man flip and swirl rainbow colours on a piece of round roti dough and tend to it like a work of finger art? You can have a stack of differently coloured pratas to go with curry.

Get it at: Banana Leaf Pork Briyani, #01-04, 71 Woodlands Industrial Estate Park E9 Wave 9

Nonya Kueh

The assorted Peranakan snacks are not new but it’s worth a shout out to remind Singaporeans that heritage foods can vanish if we don’t preserve their authentic recipes. It’s also to remind us that the technicolour trend didn’t start with rainbow cakes. Chomp into the Godfather – the multi-coloured layered kueh lapis that’s been enjoyed for more than a century.

Get it at: Rainbow Lapis at two outlets: Ci Yuan Community Centre and National Heart Centre, or online.

Glutinous Yellow Rice Cake
image

Who would expect this little shop selling traditional Malay-Indonesian lemper glutinous rice cakes to be such a hit when it opened not long ago? Unfold the delicate green banana leaf to reveal a small block of glutinous rice tucked with spiced beef or chicken. Or go regal with a hefty cake-shaped version coloured with turmeric and slice it into wedges for a special occasion.

Get it at: Ratu Lemper, 16 Baghdad Street

Xiao Long Bao

Who could forget the Paradise group when they pretiffied old Shanghainese soupy meat dumplings shocking the culinary world here with brave flavours years ago? Like a palette presented in a bamboo steamer, the differently coloured dumplings are emboldened with flavours of ginseng herb, foie gras, black truffle, crab roe, cheese, garlic, and Szechuan spices.

Get it at: Paradise Dynasty at ION Orchard; Lot One in Choa Chu Kang; Causeway Point in Woodlands Square; Westgate in Gateway Drive; VivoCity in Harbourfront Walk, OneKM in Tanjong Katong Road; and Terminal 3 at Changi Airport.

Batik Swiss Rolls
image

Inspired by the ancient Javanese art, these rolls sold like hot cakes last Hari Raya. The bold Batik motifs that flow from the traditional to the abstract should impress any artist. You can choose the filling inside from a selection of six that include vanilla, blueberry, buttercream, and Nutella. Prices range from $26 to $28.

Get it at: Batikrolls by Nura.
