Always on the hunt for new dining spots? We bring you sound bites on where to eat, including new restaurant and eatery openings, the best places for your after-work tipple, and what’s new in the food scene.
What to know this week: Have a taste of Japan in a cable car, savour Mexican fare with Super Loco Group’s vibrant Day of the Dead feast featuring a special collab with Janice Wong, Shangri-La Singapore’s new Middle Eastern dining concept, and more.
Following its Italy-themed affair last year, Mount Faber Leisure Group has introduced the 90-minute Fly Me To Japan cable car dining experience, together with a special four-course dinner that shines the light on seasonal produce sourced from renowned Japanese prefectures like Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Shiga.
You’ll first tuck into appetisers at Arbora Hilltop Garden & Bistro’s pre-dining lounge; think miso soup with Mozuku seaweed and chicken meatballs as well as grilled Hokkaido scallops with uni and sea grapes, before hopping on the cable car itself for mains. You’ll also get a pair of bells on which you can pen your wishes before hanging them at the Arbora Garden.
For mains, there’s the option of grilled Japanese Omi Wagyu or the pan-seared unagi (eel). We recommend the wagyu, which comes tender and nicely marbled, and is accompanied by mashed purple sweet potato and daikon. You’ll get a total of an hour on the cable car, with your dinner ending on a sweet note with a yuzu panna cotta as well as sakura leaf tea. A vegetarian menu, as well as sake pairing is available.
Plus: We love that there’s a Bluetooth speaker on board so you can play your own music throughout your ride.
Available from now till Dec 31, 2021. From $385++ to $432++ (with sake pairing) per couple. Boarding starts from 5.30pm. Arbora Hilltop Garden & Bistro is at 109 Mount Faber Rd, Mount Faber Peak, Singapore 099203. Visit its website to book or for more information.
If you head to Mexican restaurants Lucha Loco or Super Loco this November, you’ll find the space, especially its quaint outdoor lawn, decked in vibrant colours and decor — a nod to Día de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead, which is a colourful celebration of life and the dearly departed. To commemorate the occasion, it’s also unveiled a special month-long menu.
Start (or end) your meal with the Black Maria Margarita ($19++). A nod to the tradition of ofrendas (home altars), it’s a refreshing mix of blackberry rosemary agave, tequila and firewater bitters that gets a smokey touch with charcoal-smoked salt.
For starters, order the succulent Seared Scallops with Roasted Corn Puree ($26++) brightened with tangy agua chile gelee. Then move on to the Beef Short Rib Enchiladas ($38++), with slow-braised beef stuffed in colourful soft and chewy corn tortillas and fired up with a chili colorado sauce.
If you have a penchant for Middle Eastern fare, then you’ll want to keep Shangri-La Singapore’s new delivery concept, Safiya, on your radar. The takeaway and delivery service, helmed by head chef of Middle Eastern cuisine Ara Sayegh, doles out lip-smacking plates of delectable mezze, hearty mains, and desserts.
You can’t go wrong with the Duo Dips ($14+) of velvety baba ghanouj and hummus, amped up with spices and served with soft and chewy pita bread. We also enjoyed the flavourful Kibbe Krass ($16+), bulghur wheat croquettes stuffed with minced lamb, as well as the juicy Lamb Kebab ($22+) married with onions, parsley, and a heady spice blend.
For dessert, you get sweets like baklava ($14+), as well as meghli ($9+), a traditional vegan Lebanese rice pudding. Dithering over what to order? Go for the set menus for a hearty feast for two ($48+) or for four ($90+).
Visit its website, call 6213 4398 or e-mail dining.sls@shangri-la.com to order. Island-wide delivery and self-pick-up from Shangri-la Singapore’s Tower Wing, Lobby Level is available on Wed to Sun, 12pm to 2.30pm.
From Nov 11, you can expect an overhaul of Ippudo’s grand menu.
Two stars of the refreshed menu: the seasonal Yuzu Tori Shio and Yuzu Tonkotsu ramen ($16.85 each), both of which are given a zesty touch with the citrus fruit. The creamy yuzu-infused tonkotsu ramen is interesting and comes with tender cha shu slices, but we’ll give our vote to the shio ramen; the lighter broth pairs better with the bright yuzu flavour.
Apart from ramen, you can look forward to other plates like a tangy Harusame Salad ($4.80++) with glass noodles, Pizza Bun ($4.80++), and Tosa Katsuo Tataki ($14.80++), flash-seared fresh skipjack tuna slices. There’s also the Ikura Chahan Ochazuke that sees flavourful Japanese-style fried rice and salmon slices doused in a light umami green tea-based broth.
Both yuzu ramen will be available from Nov 11 to Dec 31 only. Certain dishes will only be exclusively available at different outlets. Ippudo is at multiple locations, including Raffles City, Westgate and Mandarin Gallery. Visit its website for a list of outlets.
