Life Lessons We Learnt From Hillary Clinton’s Pinterest

The former first lady isn’t just gunning for the US presidency. Hillary Clinton is standing up for women everywhere, one Pinterest board at a time.

by By Natalya Molok  /   July 29, 2016

Hillary Rodham Clinton, the would-be first female president of the United States, has a Pinterest account! Who would’ve thought it?

She’s no stranger to the trials and tribulations offered by modern technology (ahem…email-gate anyone?) but with her latest choice of social media platform, the former first lady is offering up a softer, more personal side of herself to the public.

She has 17 boards and counting, ranging from “Women who inspire” to “Newest (and best) job: Grandmother”. Here are some of her best pins, and the lessons they can teach us about navigating this winding road called life:

Life Lessons We Learnt From Hillary Clinton's Pinterest
1. Stay True To Yourself

Little did we know that nearly five decades on from first her commencement speech at Wellesley College in 1969, that Hillary Clinton would still be able to command a stage just as brilliantly as she did as a student-elected speaker. Her endurance is testament that it’s important to stick to what you believe in and to persevere even in the face of hardship.

2. Be Grateful

What a week it’s been for Hillary! She’s made history as the first woman to be the presidential nominee of a major political party but perhaps more impressive is the strides she’s made for women in the political arena. She wasn’t afraid to show her gratitude, first and foremost, to the people who made her feat possible. It may be a symbolic gesture but every small act of kindness can have a big impact for those around you.

3. Run A Tight Ship

No political campaign could’ve gone as far as Hillary’s without some semblance of organisation. Mrs. Clinton has numerous pins on arrangements for house parties and the like, so we can only assume that she runs her campaign in similarly structured fashion. Take her lead and start organising different facets of your own life. Here’s an example, make a list of all the clothes you don’t wear anymore, have a spring clean and donate them to charity!

4. Poke Fun At Yourself

The former US Secretary of State became tabloid fodder when news broke that she used an unofficial email server during her tenure. But rather than let it get to her, Hillary embraced the gossip and turned it on its head by putting up pins of her look-a-like fans dressing up for Halloween on her Pinterest page. Next time you face criticism, brush it off and make like Hillary!

5. Let Music Be Your Guide
image

Hillary is clearly a fan of some of today’s best pop acts. Check out her Girl Power play list above as proof. Music has been proven to have a number of health benefits, like reducing stress and stimulating our brain waves. So next time you’re feeling down in the dumps, why not take break, crank up the radio and let loose to the music.

6. Always Be Gracious
image

She had a grueling campaign run in the lead-up to her groundbreaking nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate but Hillary never made it look like a chore. She always smiled in every selfie and was always ready with a high-five if someone needed it. She showed grace and poise at every turn and if there could only be one lesson that you take away from this list, let it be this one.

7. Look To Women You Admire
image

Hillary has a whole board dedicated to some amazing women who’ve inspired her throughout her life. They include modern day icons like Trans activist Sylvia Riviera to the most admired women in the arts and media industry like Maya Angelou and Barbara Walters. Pick someone you know that inspires you and let their philosophy in life guide you in yours.

8. Find Refuge In Family
image

She may be a political force to be reckoned with now but Hillary Clinton is also a wife, mother and grandmother. While life under the glare of November’s election can’t be easy for her, Hillary knows she can always turn to her family for advice and comfort. Strengthen and nurture the bonds you have with your family too, and remember not to take them for granted.

8. Stay On Brand
image

The Hillary that we know would never veer away from her tailored pantsuits and primped-up hair. She’s been rocking this look for the better part of four decades so you can’t fault her for staying on brand. She knows who she is and she’ll take any opportunity to sell it at every chance she gets. Take the time to hone your own personal brand. A good way to start is to think about what you want people to say about you when you’re not in the room and work on how to get there step-by-step.
