Female-driven television shows that depict women as the heroes of their own stories are few and far between. 2017 saw that narrative finally change as shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Veep and Big Little Lies dominated the headlines, and saw women sweep up awards on both sides of the camera, proving once and for all that women in the TV industry are both valued and valuable.
That all the major Emmy categories this year were dominated by stories about women is an impressive feat. It’s even more impressive when you consider the inclusivity problems that continue to plague the Oscars, and other awards shows.
