Here Are 10 Style Lessons To Learn From The Star Awards 2017’s Red Carpet

by Aaron Kok  /   April 17, 2017

As the cream of the local television crop gathered to honour their peers for their acting achievements last night, several celebrities hit style-highs with everything from classic elegant cuts to quirky, daring prints.

In recapping the best red carpet turns, here are 10 style lessons we can all learn from last night’s celeb attendees.

Here Are 10 Style Lessons To Learn From The Star Awards 2017’s Red Carpet
1. It pays to wear the pants.
image

Who: Zoe Tay

Wearing: Schiaparelli Couture

While much of the buzz was about Zoe winning the Best Actress prize – an award that has eluded her for the past 21 years – there was just as much attention lavished on her fuchsia jumpsuit.

Schiaparelli is known for their affinity for surrealist motifs and quirky colour combinations, and both of these traits came through in the oversized heart and the combination of burgundy, fuchsia and teal. Plus, props to her for eschewing the usual red-carpet dress and going for a trousers.

2. Sometimes, less is more.
image

Who: Joanne Peh

Wearing: Jessicacindy

On anyone else, a flared tulle number with full sleeves and lace trims could look dowdy and overwhelm the wearer. But on Joanne, she looks like a modern day Grace Kelly.

This look works because it’s the sum of everything. She’s kept her hair simple and tied back into a tight chignon, her makeup consists of her pregnancy glow and a red lip, and she’s kept her accessories to a minimal with just a pair of drop earrings. We could all learn something from her on pregnancy-chic.

3. Taking risks can pay off in a big way.
image

Who: Felicia Chin

Wearing: Mary Katrantzou

Clashing three types of prints with three types of colour (and not to mention having a peplum) can sound like a fashion disaster just waiting to happen, but Felicia wears it with enough aplomb to make it work.

Her look was definitely one of the night’s more adventurous options, but the reason why we loved it was because the prints push the boundaries just enough without overdoing it, and the fit of the skirt helped to create a sculptural silhouette.

4. Contrasting materials add depth to any look.

Who: Jayley Woo

Wearing: Whole9Yards

Where red carpet dresses tend to err on the darker spectrum of the colour wheel, Jayley’s sherbet-hued dress is a breath of fresh air. For a pre-show event, Jayley chose to go with a frothy gown that fell in line with her girlish sense of style.

Looking like wearable spun sugar, the yards of ruffled and shirred tulle over French lace add depth and help to achieve a detailed-enough look without much effort needed.

5. Keep your back looking as good as your front.
image

Who: Rebecca Lim

Wearing: Oscar de la Renta

Similar to what she wore last year, Rebecca Lim chose a black gown for her turn on the red carpet. While the colour and cut is relatively safe, it gets interesting in the back.

Even though an oversized bow that stretches from shoulder to shoulder borders on being costume-like, the safe choice of black and the classic ‘50s cut keeps her looking poised and elegant.

6. Tone-on-tone embellishment add a subtle hint of glitz.
image

Who: Jessica Liu

Wearing: Berta Bridal

Likewise with Jessica, it was all party in the back with a scoop-back cut to her gown. But what caught our attention was the intricate detailing that featured throughout her look.

Reminiscent of falling snow, the beading gave this dress an element of class, without going overboard. Her choice of Tiffany & Co. earrings also helped to complete the look for a megawatt finish.

7. Who said you couldn’t wear high street on the red carpet.
image

Who: Kate Pang

Wearing: Alice + Olivia

In what was one of several floral looks featured throughout the night, Kate’s ensemble stood out particularly because she shows that you can wear high street on the red carpet.

Complimenting her blooming dress with a touch of bohemian by way of tribal statement earrings from H&M, the starlet showed off a youthful side to her style.

8. A no-nonsense suit will turn heads.
image

Who: Chen Liping

Wearing: Max Mara

Taking the term “red carpet dressing” to literal heights, Liping’s HTT red suit was a stunning turn for the actress.

Though we could have enjoyed the look better without the oversized pussybow distracting us, the nipped-in waist and the figure-flattering cut of the trousers stole the scene.

9. Paint a pretty picture with painterly prints.
image

Who: Ya Hui and Paige Chua

Wearing: Couturissimo (Ya Hui) and Alice + Olivia (Paige)

We’re not sure if the two celebs conspired to create a #twinning moment on the red carpet, but nonetheless, Ya Hui and Paige showed one of the night’s more daring looks.

Painterly prints aren’t often associated with evening dresses, so seeing not one but two renditions of the print was surprising. Still, they made it work by keeping their choice of accessories simple and their makeup as little as can be afforded at a typical red carpet event.

10. Update a basic black dress.
image

Who: Jeanette Aw

Wearing: DSquared2

A black dress for a gala event? Snooze. A black dress featuring sprouts of ruffles, an asymmetric neckline and a thigh-high slit? Now that’s where things get interesting.

Known for their campy designs that celebrate colour and sex appeal, Jeanette’s dress was a refreshing take on the Milan fashion label’s usual look. The only thing we’d change would be that pair of clunky platform shoes, but other than that, this was a style-win.
