5 Ways You Can Dress For Our Monsoon Season

by Sean Tham  /   January 3, 2019

When it comes to Singapore’s punishing monsoon season, it’s tricky to get dressed for work. Sometimes it’s so hot that layering might seem impractical. Other times, it’s freezing cold in the office and pouring outside that you unconsciously start to pile on your scarves and blankets. But we dare say it isn’t too difficult a thing to accomplish here — if you choose your separates right. Here are some ways you can nail the layering technique for our crazy weather. Say yay to looking stylish without compromising on comfort!

5 Ways You Can Dress For Our Monsoon Season
1. Opt for lightweight fabrics
image

With the right fabrics, layering will be a walk in the park in steamy Singapore. Think of materials like cotton, rayon or linen — anything that’s lightweight or flowy works. Over here, we’ve chosen to layer a rayon shirt over a striped cotton t-shirt and a pair of cotton chinos. The shirt will keep you warm in the cold office — you can always remove it and drape it over your shoulder during lunch. Complete the casual look with a pair of sneakers that will keep your soles comfortable.

Shirt, $29.90, from Uniqlo. T-shirt, $121, from Kule. Pants, $59, from Muji. Sneakers, $152, from Adidas Originals. Tote, $661, from Nanushka at NET-A-PORTER. Earrings, $295, from Alighieri.

2. Choose the right blazer

A structured blazer is always perfect when you want to sharpen up your look. However, avoid those that are too rigid, meaning materials like wool, corduroy and flannel are a big no no. Thick and dense, they’d be unbearable in the heat. Go for a number that’s made out of polyester to keep yourself cool. Here, we’ve paired a polyester blazer with a ruffled dress to give a spiffy edge to a feminine vibe. Finish the look with a pair of comfortable flats and a pair of statement earrings.

Jacket, $116, from Topshop. Dress, $119, from Zara. Earring, $259, from 1064 Studio at NET-A-PORTER.Bag, $85.90, from Charles & Keith. Shoes, $1,520, from Gucci.

3. Layer up on different lengths

Okay, so it’s hot outside when it’s sunny, and it’s cold in the office when it pours. One way you can nip this problem is by layering your pieces. Instead of pairing long with long, try different lengths for a more interesting look. The extra layers keep you warm, and the long-meet-short lengths keep you from looking like you’re drowning in fabric. Here, we’ve paired a swanky black vest-suit with a printed short-sleeve blouse. For a touch of colour, wear vibrant earrings or play with your shoes, like this pair of red heels that will give you extra height.

Vest, $69.90, from Zara. Top, $143, from Madewell. pants, $45.90, from Zara. Bag, $3,302, from Saint Laurent. Shoes, $116, from Topshop. Earrings, $48, from COS.

4. Tie your outerwear around your waist

An easy way to layer in humid weather is to focus on textures. One trick that we often abuse: Tying your outerwear around your waist to create a pleated, peplum effect. We’ve chosen a chic biker jacket that you can wrap around a maxi dress. Go for a sleeveless number so that you can layer a cotton short sleeve shirt underneath for maximum effect. Sling a cheerful yellow bag over your shoulder to complete the look.

Jacket, $119, from Zara. Dress, $109, from H&M. Shirt, $831, from Rosetta Getty at NET-A-PORTER. Bag, $159, from COS. Earrings, $36.90, from Topshop. Shoes, $56.90, from Charles & Keith.

5. Accessories over apparel

If the rain and shine has got you playing it safe with your clothes, then go all out and have fun with your accessories! The general rule of thumb is to limit the layering to one type of accessory. If you’re putting on a few necklaces, keep the rest of your adornments simple. A thin belt and a pair of mismatched hoops will do the trick. Keep your fingers and wrists bare to balance out the overall image.

Necklaces, $590, from Roxanne Assoulin at NET-A-PORTER. Shirt, $99.90, from Zara. Skirt, $99.90, from Zara. Earrings, $341, from Alghieri. Shoes, $590, from By Far. Bag, $69.90, from Charles & Keith.
