Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the best time to be all extra and dress up without the fear of being judged.

And because we’re Singaporeans, what better way to celebrate the occasion by dressing up as characters that all locals can relate to? The best thing is, these ideas are relatively simple to execute, easy on your wallet (nobody wants to spend S$100 on a one-off celebration) and you’ll probably be let into most venues too. Scroll on for nine cheap, easy and funny Halloween DIY costume ideas that every Singaporean can relate to. Just remember to keep your masks on, and have fun!

Safe Distancing Ambassador (SDA)

The iconic SDAs, circa 2020, have been terrorising reminding Singaporeans to wear their masks properly and keep a safe distance from each other. Mainly spotted in malls and other crowded places in Singapore.

What you’ll need:

  • A red polo tee or this Safe Distancing Ambassador vest, S$8.90
  • Any pair of jeans
  • ID cardholder with lanyard, S$3

NEA Officer

Errant smokers, especially, keep a special lookout for these guys. Infamously equipped with body cameras, a backpack, white/black polo tee and sometimes wearing bright yellow vests and walking around in pairs, NEA officers are like ghosts that suddenly appear out of nowhere and start issuing fines.

People who smoke in non-designated zones run away, because anyone caught doing so can be fined S$200 if caught smoking in prohibited places, or up to S$1,000 if convicted in court. Now that’s scary.

What you’ll need:

  • Body camera (good if you already have a GoPro, but if not, you can get a similar shape to replace it such as this chest bag, S$7.50)
  • Reflective yellow vest, S$3.80
  • White polo tee
  • Any pair of jeans
  • Any black backpack
