For this family of four, providing a safe learning space for their children is optimal. The minimalist idea was what they brought this up to Philip Chong of 13th Design Studio for the design and renovation of their 4-room BTO flat.

With this design brief in mind, Philip created a bright and airy home that features soothing colours and rounded edges. Plenty of hidden storage was also needed, so he also incorporated elements like a platform bed and a fluted-panelling wall to conceal the bomb shelter and shoe storage.

One of the existing walls had to be removed in order to make the living room bigger and more conducive to family bonding and play. At the homeowners’ request, Philip also specifically designed the living room with no television, so that the family would spend more time being together instead of focusing on the screen.

Where the TV wall usually is, there now stands a full-height cabinet that not only provides extra storage space, but also features a magnetic chalkboard laminate that the children can doodle on, encouraging creativity and learning.

Rounded corners are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also child-friendly since they prevent bumps and scratches.

On the other end of the living room is a comfortable plush sofa and a wood feature wall that lends a visually soothing touch.

At the entrance, Philip used fluted-panel carpentry to conceal the bomb shelter and create extra shoe storage.

The flooring used throughout the home is made of wood-inspired ceramic tiles from Ricelab for durability — a must when kids and a dog are constantly running around in the home.

The dining table can also be transformed into a ping pong table between meals, adding a fun and playful element for family bonding time.

In the bedroom, the platform bed is the piece de resistance — it features not only storage beneath but also a bedside table that functions as both work desk and dresser thanks to its flip-up mechanism.

The neutral palette and rounded shapes lend serenity to the bedroom.

The stairs up to the platform bed even light up!

Even though the bathroom has limited space, Philip strategically changed the position of the vanity to add more counter space for daily necessities.
