The most wonderful time of the year has arrived at Universal Studios Singapore, with the theme park sporting lots of holiday cheer and activities. And then of course, there are the lovable Minions, alongside characters from Despicable Me, Sesame Street and Shrek, all decked out in their festive best. Plus, check out all the cool augmented reality features
‘A Universal Christmas at Universal Studios Singapore’ opened yesterday (Nov 25) and The Weekly got a preview. Here’s what you can look forward to.
Christmas trees are a regular holiday fixture, but take a closer look at the ones lining the Hollywood Boulevard, near the entrance. These are dressed up by blockbuster movie franchises like Jurassic World, Minions, and Shrek.
Watch for the Rockin’ Railway at Hollywood Boulevard, where you’ll get to meet Gru, Margo, Edith, Lucy, and Agnes from Illumination’s Despicable Me as well as Shrek and Fiona from DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek. Get in line to take photos with them, but do take note that safe distancing measures apply (eg: you won’t be able to pose right next to the mascots).
PSA: Download the Universal Studios Singapore app for the timeslots of the various meet-and-greets.
Cookie Monster and Oscar from Sesame Street Workshop will also make a jolly appearance.
Don’t see Elmo and Abby? That’s because they’re over at the winter wonderland of Sesame Street and busy writing their letters to Santa. Not only can you get a photo op with them, but you can also enliven your snaps with augmented reality filters (available via the on-site signboard or on Resorts World Sentosa’s Instagram page, mobile only) and watch as the letters come alive.
Or make a stop at Minions Mail to hang out with Illumination’s Kevin and Stuart as they attempt to send theirs using ‘despicable’ technology. Likewise, use the AR filter on your phone to watch elements of the station brought alive.
Speaking of the cute overall-clad yellow munchkins, you’ll be one of the first in Singapore to meet Otto outside Minion Mart. He’ll make an appearance in Illumination’s upcoming movie Minions 2: The Rise of Gru, which will debut in cinemas worldwide in 2022.
He can be distinguished by his eight strands of hair, as well as braces (and he’s a little rounder than the rest, too).
Venture into the streets of ‘New York’ and you’ll find that it now houses a giant mailbox. Here, you can write a letter to Santa himself, hand it over to one of the Postmaster Elves, and watch them drop it into the box to be sent off via the North Pole Postal Service.
There are four augmented reality filters here to play around with. Simply scan a QR code available at the booths or check out the filters on Resorts World Sentosa’s Instagram page.
If all the letter-writing and meet-and-greets have you or the kids peckish, there are the park’s various food carts and F&B establishments to fuel up at. The Merrylicious Sips and Bites food cart, especially, will be dishing out the Christmas Turkey Leg, Christmas Cookie Tree, and Festive Macarons that’ll add to the holiday spirit.
Tickets are now priced from $59 for Singapore residents. Universal Studios Singapore is at 8 Sentosa Gateway, Singapore 098269. Visit Resorts World Sentosa’s website to book your tickets or for more information.
