How To Rock Monochromatic Outfits Without Looking Old-Fashioned

The runway shows and street style models from Spring/Summer ’20 gave us a heady mix of high saturated colours worn head-to-toe. Youthful and fresh shades of minty pistachio green, nectarine pink and buttery yellow were spotted on the runways of Ulla Johnson, Jonathan Simkhai and Loewe, just to name a few.

Varying tones and hues were layered upon each other with matching accessories and shoes, resulting in a cohesive and polished monochromatic look. To pull off this style more effectively, employ different textures and details such as ruffles and pleats that help break the monotony.

Excited to get on this bold, colourful trend? Check out five different single-hue looks to get inspired.

Fresh Ways To Rock Monochromatic Outfits Without Looking Old-Fashioned
1. Sunlight Yellow

A powerful burst of sunshine yellow is just what the doctor ordered for an uplifting season. Try dressing in this cropped top rendered in painterly brush strokes, a feminine floaty pleated skirt with dainty floral prints, and a neck scarf. Rejina Pyo’s Japanese-inspired knotted Nane bag in mustard yellow, together with a pair of mismatched earrings and loafer-style heeled pumps will give the ensemble a charming sophisticated vibe.

2. Tangerine Orange

Introduce a bright, tangy shade of orange into your wardrobe this season. This invigorating shade of orange looks contemporary and chic, so it’d be best to opt for modern silhouettes to bring out the best in this hue and not look dowdy. This 90s’-style graphic-print mini dress introduces a fresh spin to the animal print and features a sexy cowl neckline.

Lean into the recent dress-with-trousers trend for an extra modern touch. This pair of knit trousers from LA-based loungewear brand Leset are fitted on the hips with flared wide legs, so it won’t look bulky underneath the slip dress. Toss on a pair of hoop earrings (these jelly-like enamel earrings from Alison Lou are absolutely adorable), a bag with an architectural shape and a pair of sandals to complete the look.

3. Nectarine Pink

Take a page out of the style books of Tory Burch, Gucci and Brandon Maxwell’s S/S ‘20 collections and start dressing in peachy-toned pinks. This high-neck maxi dress from Chloe has an ethereal, relaxed bohemian vibe we’re very much into. Style it with a pair of high-top sneakers for a casual vibe, and throw on a statement barrette and matching soft peach earrings such as Chopard’s Happy Hearts earrings for a boost of femininity. If you’re rocking this look to the office, haul an oversized carryall and slip a pair of these sunglasses from Cartier Eyewear into your purse.

4. Flaming Red

Exuding courage and passion, a deep fiery red is another wearable shade to adopt this season. Monse’s merino wool sweater employs the brand’s avant-garde, asymmetrical cuts as seen in the tie-front neckline. Pull it over a spaghetti-strapped maxi dress, such as this paprika red leopard-print number, and slip into a pair of espadrilles from the Spanish brand known for its cult-favourite wedges, Castaner.

To complete the outfit? A pair of statement earrings designed with an abstract design, and a simple red bowling bag from Miu Miu.

5. Pistachio Green

Pastel minty green is trending hard for S/S ‘20, having been spotted on the runways of Tibi, Ulla Johnson and Jonathan Simkhai. Sweet and soft with a vibrant energy that’s sure to capture attention, pistachio green is one of our favourite spring colours to don. To wear this unique shade, team an oversized mint green blazer with a matching A-line mini skirt and a satin bralette. Finish the look with seafoam green faux pearl and crystal hair clips, a pair of ankle boots and a mini croc-effect tote bag.

Lelet NY Seafoam Set Of Three Gold And Silver-tone Faux Pearl, Crystal And Resin Hair Clips, US$219.46 (S$304.49), from Net-a-Porter; Maryam Nassir Zadeh Agnes Leather Ankle Boots, $729, from Mytheresa; Araks Yanelis Satin-Trimmed Bralette, $110, from Matchesfashion; Valentino Embellished Wool And Silk-blend Crepe Shorts, US$1,890 (S$2,622), from Net-a-Porter; Cult Gaia Estelle Mini Croc-effect Leather Tote, U$403.56 (S$559.62). from Net-a-Porter; Albus Lumen Manus Oversized Linen Blazer, US$424.99 (S$589.66), from Net-a-Porter
