Whether we choose to or not, it’s safe to say that many of us take after our mums, from our looks to mannerisms and values. And when we become mums ourselves, we tend to influence our daughters similarly. So to profess our love for all the powerful mother figures that have given all they could to love, support and nurture us, and to give it a little style twist of course, we’re rounding up our favourite celebrity mother and daughter style twinning moments.
From Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte to our May cover stars Wendy Jacobs and Iman Fandi, scroll through to get ideas for your next family portrait-worthy fashion moment.
If you haven’t picked up a copy of our May issue that features Wendy Jacobs and Iman Fandi, you’re missing out. Looking equally sharp and spiffy in neutral outfits, the styling is a testament that animal prints are for all ages. For the younger set, opt for a crop top or bralette like Fandi while the more discreet set can go with a crisp shirt or blouse.
The category is: the colour purple. In this snapshot of the family of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Princess Charlotte and Prince George gave a united stance on the fashion front by sporting the same colour. This harmonious styling can easily be emulated by your family too with something as simple as a white or black T-shirt or even matching sneakers.
PS: We’re also totally obsessed with the puffed sleeves on Princess Charlotte’s dress – very on-trend. It makes us wonder if she would grow up to be a fashion icon like her mother and late grandmother Princess Diana.
Among our curation, we reckon that Reese Witherspoon and daughter Ava Phillippe look the most alike to each other. At this event, both of them presented their own take at the classic little black dress. Witherspoon had jade-coloured embellishments and puffed sleeves while Phillippe seemingly went with an asymmetric-style dress with one sleeve being made with mesh.
Another thing they share in common? The two love black strappy sandals.
The humble blazer is probably as ubiquitous as the white shirt or denim jeans. Consequently, finding new ways of styling the blazer are always welcomed. As you can see, both Cindy Crawford and daughter Kaia Gerber went onto two different styling roads. Crawford went for the classic look, opting for a black blazer with satin lapels with sharp trousers for a smart pantsuit look. Gerber, on the other hand, took a sexier approach by layering the maroon velvet blazer with what seems to be a black mini dress to show off her legs.
Katie Holmes has, in recent years, became a fashion icon thanks to a photo that caught her flagging for a cab in New York City dressed in a cashmere bralette and cardigan. This snapshot of her and daughter Suri Cruise might be a sign that her offspring might be inheriting her sartorial senses. Both of them looked at ease dressed in matching flowy dresses, with Holmes going for a floral long-sleeved maxi design with sandals while Cruise went for a black and white polka dot midi with sneakers.
North West is still a child but she is shaping up to be a powerful fashion force thanks to the influence of her mother Kim Kardashian West. One mother-daughter look that we particularly love from them is this neon athleisure look. Kardashian went with a pink jacket and tights combination while West slipped into lime green top and skirt combo complete with a matching shoulder bag and statement sunglasses. Even West’s hair tie was lime green, showing how committed she was to the monochromatic look.
Both Diana Ross and Tracee Ellis Ross have grown to become powerhouses in their own right. We’re glad that the younger Ross has inherited some of her mother’s penchant for statement dresses that befit their status. Here, they both show off their shoulders and cleavage with stunning gowns. But if we had to choose our favourite, we’re giving our vote to Tracee’s red gown for the unique metal embellishment.
A family that dresses up in tandem together stays together – at least in the case of the Legend family. While your eyes are drawn to Chrissy Teigen and the lengthening vertical stripe jacket she wore over her black dress, notice that her daughter Luna is also sporting a similar combo, just with a denim jacket and orange dress. The father, John Legend, is not lagging behind either, pairing his embellished bomber jacket over a black T-shirt and pants.
Another mother-daughter combo that challenged the boundaries of the classic little black dresses were Lisa Bonet and Zoe Kravitz. Spotted on the red carpet at an after-Oscars party, Kravitz stayed true to her stylish laurels with a unique bubble-like silhouette complete with feathers while Bonet went for a safer route with a bandage-style dress and black pumps.
Moral of the story? You have no reason to stick to the boring cuts when choosing your next LBD.
If you’re looking to go twinning with your family, there’s no need for fanciful apparel. Sometimes, less is more effective as you can see from this image of Yolanda, Gigi and Bella Hadid. The trio went simply with black and white outfits ranging from T-shirt and dresses to denim jeans and trendy sunglasses. Your next family portrait idea could very well just be a simple white T-shirt and denim jeans, for example.
