Grammys 2019: 18 Red Carpet Looks That Took Us From “Wow” To “Whoa”

February 11, 2019

While the Grammy Awards celebrate the best in music, we celebrate the best (and worst) looks on the red carpet of this annual award show. Here’s a round up of all the outfits that made us go from “wow” to “whoa” at the 2019 Grammys:

Grammys 2019: 18 Red Carpet Looks That Took Us From "Wow" To "Whoa"
WOW: Alicia Keys
custom

She’s just a girl and she is definitely on fire. This year’s Grammy host Alicia Keys, 38, stepped out in a fiery-red buttoned bodycon number from Armani. Keeping with her ethos of being effortless yet beautiful, she finished the look with jewels from Bulgari and brought the drama with an updo that exemplified her natural curls. She proves that keeping it simple can be more effective, even at the red carpet.

WOW: Lady Gaga
custom

Lady Gaga played it safe today, leaving her meat and masks at home. Still, you can always count on her to look amazing. The 32-year-old dazzled in her sparkly Celine high-slit dress and jewellery from Tiffany and Co. The “Joanne” singer finished the entire look with matching silver heels and a natural ‘do of wavy blonde hair. Nicely done.

WOW: Michelle Obama
custom

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, 55, made a surprise cameo on the Grammy stage after Alicia Keys opened the show. But what caught our attention, other than of course, her appearance and the standing ovation she had gotten, was her shiny, mercurial green wide-leg wrapped pantsuit ensemble from Sachin and Babi. While this didn’t happen on the red carpet, we’re still adding her to our list because of how great she looks.

WOW: Miley Cyrus
custom

There’s something really cool about a woman rocking a pantsuit ensemble with confidence, and that was what Miley Cyrus served us on the red carpet right before she sang with Shawn Mendes and performed a tribute to country legend Dolly Parton. The Wrecking Ball singer dared to bare with an oversized yet fitting black outfit from pre-fall Mugler, complete with strappy heels and chunky diamond earrings.

WOW: Janelle Monáe
custom

Award-winning singer-songwriter and actress Janelle Monáe, 33, isn’t one to shy away from standing out with her unusual ensembles, and today was no different. She donned a John Paul Gaultier couture dress that features spire-like peak shoulders and a pleated, asymmetrical hemline that showed off her beautiful décolletage and cleavage. She also injected personality through a pair of mismatched earrings and a hat made with gold safety pins. Love it.

WOW: Dua Lipa
custom

Dua Lipa once said one kiss was all it takes to fall in love with her, but we say it takes one dress to fall in love with her (if you haven’t already). Dressed in an Atelier Versace strapless creation that was accompanied with a long train and adorned with delicate pieces from Bulgari, the Brit singer looked sensational. The silver and grey hues of the dress accentuated her skin tone while the bandaged bodice flattered her figure perfectly. Electrical.

WOW: H.E.R.
custom

Wearing a custom duochrome jumpsuit from Coach, rhythm and blues singer Gabi Wilson, known by her stage name H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed), shone bright on the red carpet. She finished the look with quirky sunglasses and stacked jewellery to channel her signature bohemian aesthetics. Call us obsessed.

WOW: Camila Cabello
custom

Wearing Armani Privé, the Havana singer rocked a gorgeous high-collared magenta sparkly dress with a cut-out back that showed off her curves. A picture of sophisticated elegance, Camila wisely kept the accessorising to a minimum with a pair of 30.59 carat Harry Winston earrings.

WOW: Bebe Rexha
custom

Dressed in a statement scarlet ruffled dress from Monsoori, Bebe Rexha was determined to make her presence known at the Grammy Awards. Completed with jewellery from David Morris and shoes from Giuseppe Zanotti, we’re glad Bebe silenced designers who didn’t want to dress her due to her size.

WHOA: Toni Braxton
custom

What’s a red carpet showing without a barely-there dress? This time, it was Grammy nominee Toni Braxton, who left very little to the imagination in a revealing bodycon dress that sported purple piping and jewelled embellishments. The risqué frock accentuated her figure and showed that the 51-year-old singer has still got it.

WHOA: Ashlee Simpson
custom

While we do love a sparkly, sequinned moment, we just couldn’t get onboard with Ashlee Simpson’s feathered and bejewelled number. The silver-grey jumpsuit by Georges Chakra worn by the Pieces of Me singer had too many competing details. From the sequins to the feathered capelet, to the extended length of the trousers and her multiple sparkly accessories, it was just too much.

WHOA: Tierra Whack
custom

Rapper Tierra Whack probably wore all the colours on the rainbow with her outfit by Nancy Volpe Beringer. While we admire her boldness, this look reminds us of an era when Katy Perry was still Teenage Dream-ing and Nicki Minaj was singing about how Starships were meant to fly. That’s right, it should remain in the past.

WHOA: Cardi B
custom

We are not sure if Cardi B was channeling Ursula from The Little Mermaid with her vintage Thierry Mugler number while on the red carpet with husband Offset. But what we are sure of is this over-the-top pink and black ensemble — which she topped with strings of pearls wrapped around her neck, waist and in a cone-shaped headpiece. — was neither gorgeous nor elegant. But if there’s anyone who can pull off the look with confidence, it’s Cardi.

WHOA: Kylie Jenner
custom

While we love dramatic outfits that look otherworldly, this Balmain couture ’19 blush pink number sported on Kylie Jenner looked like it was dwarfing the beauty mogul. From the high neckline to the oversized fit, exaggerated sleeves and gloves — it all made her look like she was wearing a questionable superhero outfit.

WHOA: Katy Perry
custom

The top half of her ensemble was great — we loved the mismatched earrings that matched with the silver-pink fade top. The rest of it? Not so much. The heavy, puffy bottom of this blush pink Balmain haute couture creation made her look like a Barbie doll stuck atop a heavily piped cupcake. That waistline? Not flattering.

WHOA: Ashanti
custom

Featuring a black velvet top and gold ruffled train, Ashanti’s outfit for the Grammys did not win her any votes. The ruffles and layers, combined with the velvet, added too much weight to the entire ensemble. The result? It looked heavy and suffocating.

WHOA: Joy Villa
custom

American singer Joy Villa isn’t afraid to express her political beliefs, as evidenced by her dress that showed her support towards US President Donald Trump’s initiative to build a wall between America and Mexico. Fine by us, but we’re not liking the crazy dress that looked like her nephew drew on it. Coupled with a weird mix of barbed wire, a “brick” handbag and antenna sticking from her head, it was just a complete mess.

WHOA: Heidi Klum
custom

Perhaps Heidi Klum wanted to relive her former days as a Victoria’s Secret angel, but we’re not a fan of this Stephane Rolland winged white dress. It was too heavy at the top with extravagant ruffles and diamonds from Lorraine Schwartz, and too little at the bottom with that short miniskirt length.
