Here’s How Being A New Mum Has Completely Changed Meghan Markle’s Style

by Aaron Kok  /   July 22, 2019

Since the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry in 2017, the world has seen Meghan Markle go through a remarkable transformation from Hollywood actress to newly-minted member of the royal family.

Led by her fitted Givenchy wedding dress, Meghan’s wardrobe soon showcased her love for all things tailored. She’s worn caped dresses, pencil skirts, figure-hugging tops and sharply-cut coats. And, as if right on cue, each of these looks are almost always paired with a pair of sky-high pumps. Yes, Meghan’s style is a tried-and-tested combination of fit and elegance.

Yet, since the duchess gave birth to baby Archie back in May, we’ve started to notice that Meghan’s own style has evolved considerably.

This is to be expected with most new mothers, because having a newborn baby means lots of breastfeeding, still working through the pregnancy bloat and finding the middle ground between comfort and looking good.

Having said that, Meghan wears her new look beautifully. Click ahead to see how being a new mum has softened Meghan’s fashion sense, and created a new and more approachable look.

Here's How Being A New Mum Has Completely Changed Meghan Markle's Style
1. Say yes to the shirtdress!

Maternity and post-maternity dresses may serve well in terms of functionality, given that you need something loose-fitting and easy to remove when it comes time to breastfeed.

But have you ever looked at your post-maternity dress and sighed at how frumpy it looks? That’s where Meghan’s ingenious trick comes in: the loose shirt dress.

Not only does it offer you plenty of comfort and ease of movement, it’s just stylish enough to be worn out without having to worry about how your post-maternity dress might age you.

2. Do sexy in a subtle way

You deserve to feel your best, but sometimes, it can be a little hard to jump straight into your favourite backless dress after having a baby.

This is why we are loving Meghan’s LBD, which she wore to the premiere event of The Lion King in London. The dress features her signature sense of tailoring, given that it’s nipped in at the waist and features a more forgiving flared skirt silhouette.

The subtle sexiness comes across in the sheer panels that form the neckline and sleeves of her dress. It still flashes a little bit of skin, but does it in a way that whispers rather than shouts.

3. Switch up your skirt

Previously, Meghan’s usual choice of skirt was the pencil skirt — she is the one royal that favours tailored separates more than any other member of the royal family — but since giving birth to baby Archie, Meghan can now be seen embracing a softer skirt shape.

At the recent Wimbledon match, where she watched her good friend Serena Williams play, Meghan arrived in a pressed white shirt tucked into an indigo-blue printed pleated skirt.

This outfit works for two reasons. Firstly the white shirt still shows that Meghan isn’t eschewing tailoring altogether. Secondly, the pleated skirt allows her to sit more comfortable, and offers a more flattering silhouette for new mums because it doesn’t hug to your skin.

Put these two factors together and you get a look that can be recreated for the office or for when you need to dress up a little more than usual.

4. White feels right

Another big change in Meghan’s fashions are in her choice of colours.

Previously, the duchess was known to either go for dull, moody colours or swing in the opposite direction and pick a vibrant coat or dress. So when she was joined by her beaming husband Prince Harry to announce the birth of their son Archie, we were just as surprised to see her in a radiant white sleeveless dress.

This look works in particular, because it still features the structure that Meghan favours. Yet white also helps to open up your face so you look softer and more approachable.

5. A little closer to ground
image

By now, most of us are well aware that Meghan is often seen wearing her beloved high-heeled pumps. And while she still leans towards them every now and then (such as at the aforementioned Lion King premiere, for example), it’s refreshing to see the new mum in a pair of flats.

Still, something that doesn’t change in her choice of flats is the pointed toe front that helps to elongate her legs.

On top of that, pointed-toe flats are also great for looking a little more dressed up without having to resort to the discomfort of squeezing your post-preggers feet into a pair of heeled pumps.

6. Roomy blazers add another layer of coverage
image

Heading back to the office after your maternity leave is over? The roomy blazer is here to help you look your best.

Just like how Meghan is wearing it here, it helps if you have a boyfriend-fit blazer hanging in your wardrobe, because it can easily dress up any outfit you have on.

Be it over a t-shirt or with a pair of dark wash jeans, the roomy blazer adds more coverage to your outfit and is still comfortable enough to be worn throughout your day. What more could you ask for out of a humble jacket?
