Where To Get Delicious Indian Sweets For Deepavali

Festive goodies, from mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival to log cakes for Christmas, are getting more newfangled and fancier every year. For the upcoming Deepavali celebrations, some Indian restaurants in Singapore are putting a twist on the traditional Indian sweets (called mithai), too.

The sweets – symbols of happiness and good luck – are commonly exchanged as gifts among family and friends during the Festival of Lights, which marks the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Traditional flavours are milk- and nut-based, and the sweets come in varieties such as burfi (milk-based sweets), ladoo (flour- and gheebased balls) and jalebi (deep-fried flour batter drenched in syrup). But think mithai with a twist, with creative, modern flavours and ornate packaging.

Here are eight places in Singapore to try out some fancy mithai as well as other Deepavali treats:

For those watching their sugar intake, take your pick from a selection of delicious handmade goodies with a healthy spin, created by the restaurant’s dessert chef. Featuring both sweet and savoury treats, this year’s lineup includes a nutrient-packed Fig & Nut option with chia seeds.

Other popular flavours are Mango Surprise, a blend of white chocolate, milk and mango essence; and Dark Chocolate & Hazelnut Ladoo — a festive take on Ferrero Rocher, with hazelnut powder, sugar syrup and dark chocolate rolled in a ball and coated with crushed hazelnuts.

At this fine dining Indian restaurant, you can get your hands beautifully-packaged mithai and give back to society at the same time, as 10 per cent of sales profits will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year’s wholesome flavours include coconut barfi (with a touch of cardamom), double date & dried fruits barfi, dilkushar (slow-roasted lentils), pista lauj barfi (pistachio) and gud til gajak (signature sesame treat); along with savouries such as pepper-tossed roasted cashew nuts and masala roasted almonds.

The one-Michelin-starred restaurant continues to get inventive with its mithai flavours this year, packing them with nutritive nuts and superfoods with natural sweetness from the ingredients.

Signature flavours include their Delectable Diamante Delight (featuring Iranian figs as well as cashews, almonds and pistachios), Mandarin Orange, Ginger & Saffron Sensation (a combination of orange peel, candied ginger bits, chia and melon seeds and Saffron), and Premium Rose Royale (made with rose petal preserve flown in from Lucknow, India).

Another must-try is their Betelnut leaf & Green Apple Sensation, which fuses spicy betel nut leaf (usually chewed as a mouth-freshener and digestif) combined with green apples and pistachios.

For delicious traditional sweets, this famed restaurant at Marina Bay Sands has launched a range of treats encased in classic colourful boxes specially for the festive season. Choose from delectable flavours like Alphonso (a type of mango) and white chocolate, pistachio and gulkand, coconut and gula melaka and a variety of nuts and seeds. There’s also an assortment of dry fruit to choose from.

They’ve crafted a selection of eight different types of freshly-made chocolates infused with unique flavours like masala tea truffle (milk chocolate with infused masala tea ganache), menta (mint with dark and milk chocolate ganache) and gulkand truffle (dark chocolate with infused rose ganache). Choose between an eight-piece or 16-piece Diwali box that’s specially designed for this year’s festivities.
