How This Apartment Was Transformed Into A Modern Classic Residence

This 1,600 sq ft 4-bedder in the east was dark, dated and gloomy until renovations transformed it into modern luxury

It’s hard to see the potential of a residence when it’s over two centuries old, but that’s what the team at TDC & Associates saw in this established condo along Bayshore road in Singapore.

One of the few condos along the east coast to enjoy an unblocked view of the sea, the 4-bedroom unit was completely gutted to give it a new lease of life.

“We wanted to create a home that could withstand the trials of time, and look just as beautiful and up to date many years from now as it was when completed,” Chan explains, “This is the place where the couple can spend quality time in, not just alone but with their friends and family as well since they love to entertain.”

In order to elevate the cosy appeal of the living room, the TDC design team spent a lot of time with the homeowners to shop for the right furniture. After several visits to luxury Italian brand Minotti’s showroom at Raffles Shopping Arcade, they found a modular sofa with specially selected cushions to match for the living area. This is paired with the Teresa armchair from Meridiani (available from Marquis Furniture Gallery).

“Nothing too flashy that will clash with the beautiful & relaxing sea view to frame up the whole living room setting,” Chan points out, “The slim silhouette and dark wood material of both the armchair and the wall panels help to emphasise the line work for the interior. It’s simple, chic and stunning.”

To round things off, the team also made a special trip to a marble factory in order to pick out the right slab to be used as the top for the coffee table. Thanks to its size, the table required the help of six workmen before it could be carefully hauled into place.

The dining room is a picture of calm and serenity, thanks to the use of earthy colours and warm tones. The Stratos Keramik marble top of the Cattelan table (from Royal Interiors) matches the natural hues of the marble used in the living room. There’s a sense of natural flow throughout both spaces, while low-hung pendant lights help to draw the eye downwards, making the room feel more intimate and cosy.

Here in the master bedroom are several key design pointers to take note of if you want to replicate the exquisite feel of the space. Firstly, the dark veneer wall behind bed was UV coated to prevent future dis-coloration from the sunlight. Back-lit LED lights run along the side to provide soft illumination to the space at night, at the same time highlighting the vertical line-work to accentuate the height of the room. If you look carefully, you’ll also realise that all the shapes of the elements (from the artwork to the veneer on the wall) are created in a portrait mode to extend the visual impact and add a sense of consistency to the space.

Attention to detail is of utmost importance when it comes to creating the luxe factor. Here, you’ll notice that all the wiring connection for the TV is hidden behind the wall panel. Full-length motorised roller blinds were installed behind the curtain pelmet in order to give an unobstructed sea view. A light-coloured ash grey timber vinyl floor was chosen to replace the existing dark parquet timber floor.

An island counter with a white Staturio marble top was created so the homeowners would have an ideal place to put their personal belongings before retiring to bed. Finally, dark tinted glass panels edged with bronze-coloured frame was used for the wardrobe doors to provide some shielding for the contents inside while still projecting a sophisticated look.

The family room is kept light and spacious, with plenty of open seating to encourage users to lounge out and relax.

Carefully curated items adorn the open shelving beside the TV, adding to the classiness of the interior.

The colours used in the study is in keeping with the rest of the home, earthy, warm and inviting.

White Volakas glaze porcelain tiles were used for both the wall and floor in the master bathroom to help to brighten up the space. To further enhance the natural  lighting presence in this windowless bathroom, a full length day-light backlit LED light is placed below and above the full length mirror hanging cabinet above the vanity top to enhance the floating effect of the cabinet.

While the former kitchen area used to be dark and gloomy, the new version looks open and filled with light. The old kitchen was torn down and replaced with an area laid with Italian white glaze porcelain tiles with Calacatta marble vein imprint for a timeless look. The existing timber door was replaced with a tampered clear glass door to bring in more natural light and also to provide a view plus add visual continuity to the space outside. Concealed LED light strips along the bottom cabinets provide additional task lighting necessary.

Designed in this way, the million-dollar seaview can even be enjoyed from the kitchen. This home feels like a resort getaway, where one can hear the gentle roar of the tides and feel the sea breeze blow onto the face like a rejuvenating breath of fresh air to bring your cares away. Now that’s what makes for an excellent home design.
