If you are a sentimental person, incorporate old bits of furniture into new ones as homeowner and creative director of design studio Upstairs_ Dennis Cheok has done for his six-year-old daughter’s bed. 

Handmade by Dennis out of plywood, though she has already outgrown her baby crib, he made good use of its slats by fitting them into the sides of her current bed. 

Inspire creativity in your children by doing up their room walls differently as interior designer Benjeemen Heng has done. The green and blue – striped walls create a soothing ambience, while the whimsical artwork keeps it age-appropriate. 

Cute illustrated wallpapers featuring bunnies give the bedroom a playful yet cosy feel.

If your child’s room has ample space, you can afford to kill two birds with one stone when you turn the bedroom into a playground with this bunk-bed with an attached slide. 

Instead of storage bins, open-concept shelving which display toys and books clearly can inculcate a sense of responsibility and discipline in tidying up.

Instill a sense of adventure by turning their play space into an indoor safari by laying grass-like rugs and filling it with tall animal plushies. 

Perhaps kids would dread doing their homework a little less if their study space was as fun-looking as this. 

Decor features such as a tepee playhouse and wall decal add colour and fun to the children’s room, and can be removed easily in future.

Notice how the furniture and rug are all brightly coloured while the walls are screed-grey? A neutral wall palette does not need to be expensively painted over just to suit your child’s preferences since they will soon outgrow them. Instead fill the room up with bright furniture which can be swapped out more easily.  

A rug and sofa are useful in zoning the room for different functions – play can happen on the soft and warm rug, while reading or conversation take place conducively on the couch.
