Easy Ways To Decorate Your HDB Flat With Plants For That Scandi-Chic Look

by Elizabeth Liew  /   May 14, 2019

No Scandinavian-style home is complete without a touch of greenery. But if you’re not sure how to work indoor plants in your HDB flat or condo, we’ve got just the tips to help you out.

In a concrete jungle like Singapore, a beautiful house plant (or 10) instantly breathes life into a space, making it feel more relaxed, cosy and homey. Worried about your plants dying on you? Opt for these indoor plants that require minimal maintenance – perfect for busy working people.

“Singaporeans like both big leafy plants like monsteras and also cute little ones like fittonia, depending on the space they have available,” notes Denise Law, founder of Tumbleweed Plants. “There is a noticeable trend for buying small varieties matched with cute planters, which are great for a desktop at home or at the office.”

With the right tips and tricks, styling beautiful foliage in your small HDB or condominium is actually incredibly easy. Here, Denise showcases three simple yet stylish ways to spruce up your apartment with plants and achieve that coveted Scandinavian-style look.

Easy Ways To Decorate Your HDB Flat With Plants For That Scandi-Chic Look
Style 1: Use pastel-coloured plant pots.

“Pastel colours are in trend right now and they match well with white walls and wooden furniture, which many Singaporeans have at home as they love the Scandinavian, minimalist style,” says Denise. “Group soft-toned colours together such as white, almond, pastel pinks and greens.”

Is there a method for arranging them? “Think about the colour palette first,” recommends Denise. “Then, arrange the potted plants to create some layers with different sized plants and plant stands to add height where required.”

Style 1: Add accessories to complete the look.

“Mix and match plants with different shape of leaves to create some contrast,” says Denise. “Finally, mingle in some styling accessories to enhance the overall look such as pictures, glass domes, misters and yellow gold trays.”

We especially love this house-shaped accent piece that adds so much character to the overall look!

Style 2: Opt for cascading plants for a more "natural" feel.

For a more natural, less manicured look, opt for cascading plants with trailing leaves. “They offer a different type of visual impact, akin to the flow of water,” says Denise.

Style 2: The more plants, the better!

Be bold with the number of cascading plants. “The more, the merrier,” she says. “I’ve never seen a room and thought ‘there are too many plants here’. The only limitation is finding the time to water and mist them all!”

If you find the look too overwhelming, consider mingling in something which is not “trailing down” for contrast. Here, we used a jar of dried flowers.

Style 2: Keep the spotlight on the leaves.

Denise suggests choosing simple pot designs to keep the main focus on the trailing leaves. A bit of colour and texture are nice, but not necessary. You can use simple concrete pots and they’ll work just as well!

Style 3: Play with different sizes.

Spruce up a boring shelf with plants in varying sizes and heights. The trick is to start with the biggest pot in the middle to anchor the whole look. This pot should ideally have the largest leaves.

Style 3: Play with contrasting colours and patterns.

Mix things up with dark-coloured plants and pots with light-coloured plants and pots to keep the look visually interesting. You should also inject some interesting focal points with different patterns like terrazzo, lines and stripes.

Ultimately, style your plants in a way that makes you happy. Don’t be afraid to change up the styling once in a while, especially when you have new plants to bring into the mix.
