10 Indoor Plants Every Aspiring Jungalow Should Have - FeaturedThere’s no denying that more people are receptive to the idea of bringing nature indoors. Constrained by the size of HDB flats and the lack of gardening space, the plants selected for your indoor garden should love indirect sun, instead of requiring direct sunlight.

#1 Monstera Deliciousa
custom

The OG plant that probably launched the Jungalow movement, this unique and distinctive plant is also called the Swiss Cheese Plant for the holes that can be found on the leaves. Relatively low-maintenance, this plant requires indirect sunlight (or its leaves will dry up quickly), and watering once every one to two weeks. As it is a creeper plant, be prepared to add on a growing pole (like a coconut fibre growing pole) to support it.

Over summer my plants suffered quite a bit. It was really hot this summer and some plants really didn't like the heat and humidity, but the plant pests loved it and attacked many of my plants (mainly trips, spider mites and mealy bugs) it made me get frustrated with my plants and that's one of the reasons I haven't posted much (the other reason is the 12 weeks of summer holidays with two kids around me 24/7) but now autumn is slowly starting and after hard work my plants are almost pest-free and looking happy again, so I will start posting more frequently again. It's not Monday, but here is my Monstera for the #MonsteraMonday of the last few weeks..

#2 Pilea Peperomioides
custom

The Pilea Peperomioides, or Chinese Coin Plant is a really adorable plant with circular leaves. It’s recent popularity on Instagram sees many adding this distinctive plant to their foliage repertoire. This plant requires loads of sunlight although it shouldn’t be direct sunlight due to its delicate leaves and stem which are prone to drying up in extreme heat. When well cared for, this plant produces “babies” which can be separated from the mother plant and repotted.

#2 Sanseviera
custom

The Sanseviera is also known as the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue. This plant is very hardy and can withstand most lighting conditions. They’re also known to purify the air and is safe to put in your bedrooms. However, it’s also extremely toxic for cats, so just beware if you have a feline friend in the house.

#4 Spider Plant
custom

More commonly known as the Spider plant, the Chlorophytum comosum also has air-purifying properties like the snake plant. They look amazing on hanging planters and are safe to include in your bedroom. Their leaves tend to dry out at the ends, but a little trimming would do the trick. Spider plants require weekly watering, or as and when the leaves look a little droopy or even crispy. They also produce baby plants which can be snipped off and propagated, but if you choose not to, just remember to mist them often.

#5 Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree
custom

The Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree or Ficus lyrata can be purchased as a plant as small as 20 centimetres in height, to a tree of over one metre. The bigger ones make a great statement plant in a prominent corner of the house. As its leaves are huge, they only require bright sunlight, but it shouldn’t be direct or the leaves will dry up. This plant requires minimum care, so just weekly watering will do. Remember to re-pot it at least once a year so that it doesn’t outgrow its pot.

Okay let’s sit back for a second and admire this fiddle leaf fig. It is so gorgeous!!!!! ⠀ – Now onto the topic of the benefits of a lightweight planter and why I sourced this material! I personally wanted to be able to move my plants in their planters in my home by myself(phew that was a mouth full)! If you are a plant mom or plant dad I wanted to give you the freedom to move your own plant + planter with ease. So I was on a mission to ditch the traditional terracotta/clay/ceramic planters and bring to market a new material. Our planters are comprised of a custom sourced fibreglass compound (same material as cars, kayaks and boats), this high end material combines design and functionality and is a win win in my books. Don’t confuse lightweight with plastic, as our planters are thick walled and durable up to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit for my American friends). Snow storm? We gotchu?? Okay now back to admiring this beauty FLF.

#6 Calathea Musaica
custom

The Calathea Musaica has very distinctive variegation on its leaves, almost like it’s pixelated. This plant loves humidity so it’s the perfect plant to place in the bathroom. It’s also a shade-loving plant, which means no direct sunlight, and it should be kept away from the windows. The delicate leaves and stems are prone to drying out, try not to put it in areas that are too hot as well.

Boston Fern
custom

The Boston fern is a magnificent plant that’s easy to care for and can range from a small plant of just 20 centimetres to a lush 60-centimetre giant. Sometimes seen sprouting off trees that line our roads, the Boston fern loves sunlight and would do well in areas with bright but indirect sun. The Boston fern requires weekly watering but otherwise a very low-maintenance plant.

#9 Calathea medallion
custom

The Calathea medallion or peacock plant is characterised by its gorgeous variegation on the leaves resembling peacock feathers. Like the Ficus lyrata, it makes a great statement plant to have in a prominent corner of the room. It’s native to South and Central America, Africa, and the West Indies but thrives in tropical climates like Singapore’s. It loves bright indirect light but is sensitive to water which may cause its leaves to brown or lose its colour. Use distilled water, rain water or allow tap water to sit out overnight before watering.
