by Elizabeth Liew  /   November 30, 2018

With homes getting smaller in Singapore, more homeowners are turning to furnishings tailored for their living space instead of bulky pieces that end up wasting space. Nowadays, there are tons of solutions that help streamline your home and maximise space. The rise in demand also means that options are more affordable these days as well, with more and more customisable choices for consumers.

“Today’s homeowners are discerning and seek personalisation in their pieces – especially for sofas and beds in the living room and bedroom, as these anchor the look of a home and are usually where people spend the most time when at home,” says Zan Sani, Head of Furniture Buying at Courts Singapore.

“With (customisable) options, homeowners are empowered to bring to life the home of their dreams, and furnishing their homes to match their lifestyles and needs.”

6 Tips To Know When Customising Furniture For Your Dream Home
1. Look for both design and function

“The purpose of customised furniture is to create a product tailored to your lifestyle and needs while achieving your dream aesthetic,” says Zan, “and one should not be sacrificed for the other.”

For instance, if you have young children, consider a fabric sofa with removable covers that can be easily washed if spills and stains inevitably happen, she advises. Courts has a range of new water-proof fabrics that prevent liquid from seeping into your precious furniture.

2. Browse stores for inspiration

“The multitude of choices available on a variety of channels may seem overwhelming, so browse stores for inspiration as a first touchpoint; they provide a touch-and-feel experience that is irreplaceable for a furniture purchase,” advises Zan.

Visit stores such as Courts and Ikea where they regularly refresh their home display settings to showcase the latest ways to style a space. Zan recommends then going online to browse with more refined searches, as well as look out for buying guides (available on Courts online).

3. Opt for flexible storage

From modular wardrobes to shelves, flexible storage pieces are great solutions for both small and large space in your bedroom or living, says Interior Design Leader at IKEA Singapore, April Kwan.

“Flexible storage solution can accompany you through the years. For example with the PLATSA series (above), you can create exactly the solution you need. If your needs change, you can easily rebuild or complete with new features.”

4. Make use of vertical space

Another space-maximising way to achieve a stylish customised space, is with pegboards. “Unique wall storage solutions such as the Skadis pegboard from Ikea are really popular as they help add texture and dimension to your wall décor,” April says.

It also allows you to inject personality into your space by displaying photographs, mementos and other art pieces, any way you like.  “If you change your mind, it’s easy to change the accessories and create a new solution. Choose if you want to attach it to a desktop, to a shelf or hang it on the wall.”

5. Consider shopping from one place for a more harmonious overall look

“Getting customised furniture from one single source rather than multiple places will give assurance of harmony between the different pieces for a seamless look at the end, as well as provide convenience post-purchase,” Zan advises.

6. Look out for pieces that are easy to maintain

“Homeowners tend to overlook the importance of maintenance, which is key to keeping it looking fresh and welcoming,” says Zan.

For a fuss-free experience, Zan recommends shopping at a store that offers complementary cleaning and maintenance services to care for your new furniture (such as GURU at Courts), plus warranties that will give you greater ease of mind after you’ve made a purchase.
