Having outgrown their Scandinavian-style apartment of seven years, this couple, both legal professionals in their 30s, decided on a more refined, modern luxe design for their new home.
Of all the shortlisted designers, a visit to one of Parenthesis’ ongoing projects sealed the deal. “Though the project that we visited was not in the style that we wanted, we were impressed with the overall aesthetic and the quality of the workmanship,” recalls the couple. It also showcased Parenthesis’ design director Yanika Gunawan’s keen eye for lines, colours and materials.
Yanika took an image of a grey-toned French shaker-style kitchen with white marble flooring and herringbone timber floors that caught the clients’ attention as a starting point to explore a monochromatic scheme. “Most of our projects lean more towards warm woods and lighter colours. It is the first time we are proposing darker tones on a monochromatic palette, “she points out. The couple admits that the colour scheme turned out darker and moodier than they had initially envisioned, but they were convinced by the renderings.
The key to striking the perfect balance between the needs of humans and pet is a refined aesthetic that is also practical. “We did not want the interior to be too precious to be lived in because with a pet around, accidents do happen,” the couple comments. This explains the choice of durable materials that can withstand a certain amount of wear and tear over time.
The renovations took about five months and cost approximately $255,000, including furniture and appliances. What the homeowners love most is the cohesiveness of the design. The colours, materials and textures flow from one space to another, and nothing feels out of place. “Yanika has managed to marry form and function to create a practical home to live in and beautiful to look at,” says the husband.
Yanika feels that this project has certainly elevated the firm’s portfolio. She shares: “The clients put their trust in us and gave us a lot of freedom to explore finishes and details that we have not attempted before. It was an exceptionally fulfilling project as I felt they really valued my opinion.”
