#1 Apply primer

Applying make-up bears similar concepts to painting furniture or walls — an even and smooth surface to ensures that the paint adheres to it and stays on longer. Make-up primers does just that; evening out pores and fine lines so that so that foundation and other cosmetics that follow will glide on easily and stay for much longer.

Choose a primer that it suitable for your skin type as each primer serves a different function — radiance enhancing, oil control or colour correction. Don’t be afraid to apply different primers on each section of your face, especially if you have combination skin.

#2 Use the right foundation

Beauty trends often dictate the type of new foundations that are available in the market. Foundation launches often veer towards matte finishes during summer or dewy finishes during winter (although it doesn’t really apply to sunny Singapore), and although trends are always fun to experiment with, it is important to pick what’s right for your skin.

Dewy foundations are perfect for dry skin, providing essential hydration and allowing light to reflect so that skin looks more radiant. However, those with oily skin might want to stick to foundations with matte finish so it doesn’t move or slide when skin starts becoming oily throughout the day.

#3 Set with powder

When using cream or liquid foundation, it is a good idea to use a translucent loose powder to set it. However, some foundations offer a liquid-to-powder finish, so an extra layer of powder is not necessary.

If you’re using a brush, dust off the excess before applying it to prevent make-up from looking cakey. Makeup Artist Larry Yeo’s tip for using powder puffs is to pick up some powder with the puff, fold it into half and just rubbing the powder in before dabbing lightly onto skin. This method also prevents applying too much powder, and gives a nice airbrushed effect.

#4 Finish off with spray

Make-up sprays work like nail polish top coats, sealing in the colour on the skin for a longer-lasting finish. As with primers, finishing sprays come in a variety of formulas suited for different skin types. Just mist on, and let it air dry on its own.
