Ever wanted straighter teeth but felt that you’ve missed the train for braces when you were a teenager? We spoke to Julie Tay, Asia Pacific Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Invisalign on everything you’ve wanted to know about invisible teeth aligners that you were too afraid to ask your dentist.
#1 It has improved over the years
Although the general appearance of Invisalign has not changed over the years, there has been many improvements made to this unassuming plastic aligners, allowing orthodontists more flexibility in treating major teeth alignment issues.
#2 The plastic is proprietary
There may be other competing companies which produces their own invisible aligners but according to Julie Tay, the plastic which Invisalign uses is proprietary, meaning it’s developed only for them. THe plastic is thin and flexible, yet durable and strong enough to help with the movement of the teeth.
#3 Kids can do it now
Invisalign used to be reserved for teenagers, but children as young as the age of eight can have themselves fitted for Invisalign. Even though these invisible aligners have to be worn 22 hours a day, children are actually quite receptive to this routine compared to adults, according to Julie.
#4 You can do it even when you're 50
For many of us, Invisalign is a huge monetary investment that can probably only come with financial stability. That means only being able to afford it well into our 30s, 40s or even 50s when the children are all grown up. But that doesn’t mean you’ve missed the train on having straight teeth. Julie shared that a lady had her teeth straightened in her 50s and started smiling more in her travel photos, and only realised it after her husband pointed it out.
#5 It's more than just having straighter teeth
While having straighter teeth can help your appearance, the benefits are far more intangible. Increase in confidence, the ability to smile widely without having to subconsciously cover your mouth when you do, according to Julie, are things you don’t even realise you do, after you have straighter teeth.
