Thinking of going for the National Day Parade (NDP)? Even though this year’s National Day goodie bag seems like it has everything you need for a day under the sun (we heard it has a fan in case it gets too hot), here are a few more things you might want to consider taking along with you.
Bringing a sunhat would probably be the best decision you’d make when packing your NDP essentials. Not only does it serve the same purpose as an umbrella (you don’t really want to use an umbrella during the parade and risk getting complaints from the people seated behind you), you’d look super chic in an updated fedora.
Should it rain during the parade (no pun intended), anyone’s canvas sneakers or shoes would be soaked. To avoid that icky, ‘squishy’ wet-shoe feeling, bring a pair of flipflops! They would be so useful should you need a quick change of footwear to suit the weather.
Sitting under the sun for hours during the Parade would do a number on your skin, so naturally, the next item on our carefully curated list of NDP necessities is none other than sunscreen. Lather some on just before heading to the parade, and reapply throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and protected from harmful UV rays!
Another item that has to be in your NDP survival kit is a bunch of plastic bags. Each plastic bag can hold different things – save one for any items that might get wet e.g. your shoes if it rains (see second image), reserve one strictly for trash (please don’t litter), and keep another for any miscellaneous use. You’ll never know when it’s going to come in handy!

Besides sunscreen, facial mists would also keep your skin moisturized and hydrated under the sun. A little spritz goes a long way especially on a long day spent outdoors!
Wet wipes are a godsend for long periods in between showers. A useful tip – choose wet wipe sans alcohol to ensure that they don’t dry out your skin too much after use.
Eager to take photos (and maybe the occasional selfie) at the Parade but worried that moisture might seep into your phone? Easy. Purchase a pouch that is waterproof whose material has the capability to allow you to use your phone through it. Also, ones that come with a lanyard let you go handsfree whilst still keeping your phone on you at all times – reducing the risk of you losing or breaking your phone, (both by accident, of course).
Plastic ponchos are lifesavers at outdoor events. Be sure to go to the parade prepared for any weather changes.
