She’s known around the world as the award-winning novelist who created the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but we bet you didn’t know these amazing things about J.K. Rowling
Both J.K. Rowling (JKR) and Harry Potter turn a year older every 31st of July. To celebrate their birthdays, the new book, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child were scheduled to come out immediately when the clock struck 12 on their birthdays
When she was just six, she started writing stories for her family members as entertainment. Her first story titled ‘Rabbit’ was about a towering genius rabbit. Since then, she realised her passion for creative writing and continued to pursue her passion for it by penning numerous short stories.
While travelling just before she started writing Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, inspiration hit JKR about the names of the Hogwarts Houses and she wrote those names down on an airsickness bag.
After the death of her mother, JKR moved to Portugal to become an English teacher. She continued writing the manuscript for the Sorcerer’s Stone in the mornings and nights that she was free. JKR wrote one of the most famous chapters in the book, Mirror of Erised, where the story of Harry’s deceased parents reflected her own grief about her mother’s passing.
Always thought those Herbology plants in the series sounded weird? Well, they’re actually the real name of plants! JKR used to collect the names of plants that she thought sounded witch like and used them.
After learning Latin in University, the budding writer would marry English and Latin words together to form spells.
For example, the Expelliarmus spell comes from putting together “Expellere” meaning “expel”, and “arma” which means “weapon”, to create a spell that disarms a weapon from a person’s hands.
No one knew that J.K. stood for Joanne Kathleen when her first few books came out.
Many of her readers and fans would send in letters and addressed it as ‘”Sir”.
Despite her best-selling author status, JKR was always generous. Back in 2009, she donated over $17 million from the proceeds of her books to Comic Relief.
In 2003, JKR said, “You walk out of the house, you sit down in a pub, and you invent Quidditch. And I don’t really know what the connection is between the row and Quidditch except that Quidditch is quite a violent game and maybe in my deepest, darkest soul I would quite like to see him hit by a bludger.”
JKR has said that her parents met and fell in love at King’s Cross Station. She included the beloved train stop in her books to celebrate her parents’ love and show tribute to her childhood.
