Get your kids to help you bake these cute Christmas Tree Brownies (refer to the parts on [KIDS] in the recipe for what they should do) – it will be fun for them!

Ingredients

  • 250 g butter, chopped
  • 200 g dark eating chocolate, chopped
  • 1 1/3 cups plain flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 3/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 8 thick wooden skewers, tips removed, halved red and green decorating icing
01.

Preheat oven to 180 C (160 C fan forced). [KIDS: Grease and line a 30 x 20cm (base measurement) slice pan with baking paper, extending paper at long sides for handles.]

02.

Place butter and chocolate in a large heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (don’t let base of bowl touch water). Cook and stir for 3 to 5 mins or until melted and smooth. Remove bowl from pan. Cool slightly. [KlDS: Sift flour and baking powder directly into chocolate mixture in bowl. Add sugar and eggs; whisk to combine. Pour into prepared pan; level top.] Bake for 45 to 50 mins or until set. Cool in pan.

03.

Transfer brownie to a chopping board. [KIDS: Using an 8 cm Christmas tree-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 16 shapes from brownie.] Insert a wooden skewer into base of each tree. [KIDS: Decorate tops with red and green decorating icing.] Set.

Tips: Dip cookie cutter into hot water. Wipe dry, then use to cut easily through brownie. Use brownie offcuts to make Christmas rum balls for adults or scatter over ice-cream for a dessert. Make ahead: You can make and ice brownies up to 2 days ahead. Place in an airtight container. Refrigerate.
