Sorely missing a leisure trip to Tokyo, Hokkaido or Osaka? For one, you could check out these places in Singapore that’ll make you feel like you’re in Japan. Or you could head to Janice Wong’s 2am:dessertbar for (quite literally) a taste of Japan.

Following the success of her first High Tea serie, The Cakes Of Versailles, the dessert maestro is back again with her second high tea set, The Floating World Ukiyo. This time, she collaborates with local fashion designer Ong Shunmugam to showcase the delicate confectionery on the latter’s beautiful Suvarnabumi Porcelain tableware, which is inspired by Asian cuisine and culinary rituals.

The new menu is inspired by the intricate beauty of the porcelain, and named The Floating World Ukiyo (the Japanese word for “floating’, “fleeting” or “transient”), to describe the feeling of being present and mindful of the current moment, and unbothered by stress.

Featuring an exquisite assembly of sweet and salty tastes, it takes Japanese and Asian flavours and techniques on a modern and playful spin: Think miso pork and chicken dumplings wrapped like a candy bun in a homemade red and white skin.

You’ll also get to sink your teeth into other delightful bites like Citrus Bergamot Yuzu Passionfruit Basil Tart, Strawberry Swiss Roll, Rose Chocolates, Soba Noodles, Peach Wagashi confectioneries and fresh, pillowy soft mochis.

“I have always admired Ong Shunmugam’s work, and it was an honour to partner with her for the next edition of our high tea series,” said Janice Wong. “Following the success of our first set, The Cakes Of Versailles, I wanted to continue along the theme of travel and couldn’t think of a better way to showcase some of my favourite parts of Japan – the art and
the food.”

Priced at $60 per person, The Floating World Ukiyo High Tea menu is available every weekend at 2am:dessertbar from Nov 14 to Dec 6 2020, with limited sets available each day. Reservations can be made online via 2am:dessertbar.
