Meghan Markle is just months away from walking down the aisle, and joining the British royal family. And while we’ve gotten so used to seeing her all dressed to the nines and hand-in-hand with Prince Harry, her status as a yet-to-be member of the royal family means that her clothing has to come from somewhere else.
We’ve seen her ace her outfits, time and again. Whether it’s her love for bags with metallic accents (such as the now-famous Strathberry bags that have sold out on the brand’s site), or her penchant for choosing practical trousers over frilly dresses, we all want to know where she’s getting her shopping budget from.
Her fashion, after all, comes at a cost. For her first nine royal appearances, Meghan’s worn an estimated of more than SG$37,000 worth of clothing. On top of that, and contrary to popular belief, members of the royal family are not allowed to receive free clothing from designers.
So who is financing her wardrobe? The answer is: Meghan Markle herself, and the reported reason will surprise you.
Currently valued at US$4.8 million, Prince Charles has a fund that royals may use when they need to get clothing for their appearances. The fund also covers salaries of household employees, office costs and other expenditure details, but one of the more notable uses of the funds is that royals such as Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Prince William are able to look their shining best, without flouting the protocol of not accepting designer gifts. Because Meghan Markle is not officially married to Prince Harry, she does not get access to this fund.
Thanks to her previous career as an actress in the TV show Suits, Meghan has more than enough to splurge on her new wardrobe. It is reportedly estimated that Meghan drew a salary of US$50,000 towards the end of her appearance on the legal television show, and this works out to an annual salary of US$450,000. She is also allowed to accept gifts from one other person – her fiancé Prince Harry. So between her income from her acting days and Prince Harry’s gifts, we’re sure she’s more than capable of affording another Strathberry bag.
