1. Your Bedsheets

The One Thing You Use Everyday That Could Be Harming Your Health_Bed

Bad bedroom hygiene can result in breakouts and other skin issues. We spend an average of 10 hours in our bedroom daily, so it’s essential that we keep it in optimal condition for our skin.

Ms Teri Tay, Dermalogica’s Education Manager, shares some tips about how we can make our bedroom a haven for our skin too.

Sheets should be changed every one to two weeks. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll need to change your pillowcase more frequently as it houses oil and dirt from your hair. Skincare products from your face also come in contact with it, and if you don’t wash it frequently, these skincare residue accumulates.

Don’t get breakouts? You might still get skin congestion or irritation from these residue. If you sleep with wet hair, the moisture boosts bacteria growth. If you don’t have the time to change the sheets or pillow case frequently, it will help to place a small towel over the pillowcase and change this small towel frequently.

2. Your Towels

Products used on the body and face are different, so needless to say, we should use different towels for them too. Ideally, bath towels should be changed every day as mold might start to grow in between uses. This is when towels turn grayish with small black spots, sometimes also giving off a stench.

Face towels should be softer as they’ll be gentler on the face. At times, residue on the bath towel may even cause adverse reactions to the face.

3. Your Skin Is Dehydrated

Constant air-conditioning dries out the skin. Skin dryness is also caused by a lack of oil (sebum) secretion, which is hereditary. Skin dehydration can affect anyone, not just people with dry skin, and happens when the skin becomes incapable of forming a healthy barrier to protect the skin and prevent moisture loss. Applying products such as moisturisers definitely helps keep skin hydrated.

5. You Don’t Have An Air Purifier

a very neat bedroom

More than 90% of the dust around us are our dead skin cells, so the more dead skin cells you have, the more dust mites will become active and leave more waste, which irritates our eyes, nose and skin.

Having an air purifier that releases negative ions can reduce the amount of dust floating around. Negative ions naturally attract dust, mold, pollutants and potential allergens, all of which are positively charged. Instead of drifting in the air, they will then fall to the floor or table tops, and are easier to be cleaned or vacuumed away.
